The Spandex costume means that the cartoon images can display the muscles etc and therefore imply the character's strength. This isn't an animated media, remember (at least not at first).
If you get into your Spider-Man (hyphen pls ppl), for example, then you'll realise he's got a difficult and convoluted life.
One min he's fighting the Green Goblin, the NEXT, he's battling to sell photos to make rent, dealing with his Aunt who'd had a heart attack, or overcoming his grief as his girlfriend is murdered.
The stories, Spider-Man at least, were NOT just about him web-slinging his way around New York. Many had a meaningful undertone that, for me as a child, taught me many 'right from wrong' issues. He could have turned to crime to pay his rent, but chose morals over ease.
'With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility'. A line from Spider-Man, but surely one that many figures in positions of power should listen to.
Many people don't realise that much of Charles Dickens work was actually written as serialised 'eposides' for newspapers and compiled into books later. Books that we, nowadays, consider to be literary classics.
Other than the 'underpants', is there any difference?
