people these days know how to sew or do basic repairs to their clothing?

I am 28 and my grandmother made me learn how to sew--although I don't make my own clothes (I can) I do do basic repairs and buttons things like that when needed

do many people these days still know how to sew?

Good question.. I can repair a button or hem the bottom of pants. Both by hand. I grew up around women that make quilts and such and if you stood still too long around them they put you to work.. ;)

laugh I can sew buttons and darn socks, but I can't operate a sewing machine or do stitches that are good enough for any other repairs by hand. I do, however, cross-stitch.

My mother didn't have the patience to teach me, but has taught her granddaughters. Age apparently gave her the patience to teach one generation later. sigh

I can sew, always done it, nothing elaborate, buttons, hems etc, but also learnt to knit from my granny when a child, only ever knitted scarves for her, but still think I could remember how to do it.

I was taught at a young age that
I had to learn how to sew because
the climate changes,especially during
the Winter you need to be well dressed
to survive this lifestyle and being warmly
dressed will ensure that survival.

Sure can, have to be self sufficient in this day and age. If the ching ching runs out it is back to basics and making do with what you got.

My second husband could sew very well, and he's the one who taught me to cross-stitch. Again, something my mother didn't have the patience to teach me. thumbs up
