Hey All

wave

Going to be cheeky and pick your brain if you allow me...lol

Have to do report on the DNA debate.....new legislation before the dail at mo about the introduction of a dna database....

So what do you think? would you have any problems with the state holding you dna profile on a database? Should everyone be on it regardless from birth or just anyone who committs a crime? How long should they hold your profile? Do you feel it infringes on your civil liberties?

Blah blah blah......any ideas or comments much appreciated!!!

Cheers everyoneapplause

I'd have no objection to mine being in a database that is secure.

Obviously the ppl who will aagrue against it would be the criminal types. Their reason for arguing against is because they'd get caught, or be linked to particular crimes.

DNA is not infallible though... think of Chimera Syndrome.

Honestly, no, I'd be very much against it.

These things have a way of being sold to us under very nice pretenses, but can then be used in many other ways...

Anyone remember the Patriot Act in the U.S. post 9/11?

frustrated

I meant to add:

This is how police states are formed, bringing legislation which is passed by playing on the public's fears over certain current events.

Oh i was going to say only if you committed a crime but what if there is a case and there was a dna sample found but that person hadnt committed a crime before that!

But i think it should be only if you commit a crime, no matter what that crime is. Dont like this idea of people knowing everything about you, its not a free world as you like to think it is! jmo

I do question the reliability of DNA, Chimera Symdrome is classed as a highly rare suitation by the seientific community. Its were a person carries 2 seperate DNA's, but personally, I think we have no idea how rare or common it is......... when DNA samples are taken its normally taken from hair, salivia or blood, and its not ususally taken from different parts and compared. I think that chimerism could be a clue into evolution, select evolution.

Personally I wouldnt have a problem with my DNA being on a database, I mean what harm could knowing my DNA be of any risk to me?

I'm not the criminal type and frankly I find your post offensive just to assume that people who don't share your point of view are criminals.

Just how is this information to be used and who is it going to be shared with, the FBI or MI5 perhaps? The world is in a state of unrest at the moment and things which are legal today such as peaceful protest could be illegal tomorrow. Or if we end up in a facist state and they start rounding up the ethnic minorities again, well the list would be ready and waiting.Just when would you decide to step outside the law. I remember the Poll Tax riots and the Miner's strike in the UK not that long ago and people criminalised for standing up for their rights. And we had British SAS soldiers dressen in police uniforms.

Or what if they decide to go for neclear power stations here (and I garuantee you they will within 10 years) and people strongly didagree with it? Then there's the whole Corrib Gas pipeline carry on.

Rememeber the state this country is in just now. We are ripe for a Maggie Thatcher character.

And if you think all policemen are honest and reasonable all the time, think again. The Garda have been caught before falsifying evidence.Think of Donegal and the man who served time for murder.

I consider this idea of holding files on people very similar to the old East German stasi meathods. It's yet another erosion of our civil rights and our freedom.

And as usual, they will try to convince us that it's for our own good.
