Well the whole reason for talking to someone here is getting to know them better.
If it stops, then it´s usually because it becomes clear there is no future after learning more about the person.
Reasons, and a polite goodbye should be given though.

The same reason men do it. They were passing the time and probably enjoyed the chat but something or someone else has caught their interest. It's a pity when it happens and you really think you might like that person who cuts contact....but, chatting is obligation free.
