look JLM i see where you're coming from, like you said the internet is a total different ball game, but at the same time i think sometimes we have to lower our expectations a bit. basically the way i see it you send a first mail the person takes a look at your profile and sends a mail back if interested, doesnt really matter what you put in that first mail (unless its blatantly abusive or something). like i said the very first you say in real life is hi, you get an instant response one way or the other and play it from there. you dont get that instant response online, so the obvious thing to do is say hi... and wait to say if you get a hi back. least that way you know the other person is interested, then like i said you play it out from there. first emailing is a nerve wracking thing, especially with the absence of eye contact for obvious signs etc, so call me a fool but i'm not gonna open the conversation up til i have some kind of sign the other person's interested in getting to know me. i could open it up and ask some more questions in a first mail, but to be honest for me that's like putting my balls on a plate and handing out a machete. basically its self protection, and if we all didn't exercise this a bit we'd all be emotional wrecks. personally i try to see things from the other persons point of view not just my own, but i think both people need to be able to see it from the other persons side, relationships being a two way affair when all's said and done. Anyway, happy new year

Yes, I totally see your point, making the first contact is difficult, and any guy that makes any sort of effort with me will get a plesent reply back. Anyway, wishing you all the best for the new year too.

Make sure when you send an email that you have checked their profile as to when they were last online.
