Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan has confirmed that he intends to continue in office after being diagnosed with cancer.
In a statement, Mr Lenihan confirmed that he will need chemotherapy and possibly radiotherapy after cancerous tissue was removed from the entrance to his pancreas.
However, he said his doctors say he is fit to continue to fulfil his duties.
Now Pancreatic Cancer is a Life threatening disease and the prognosis from my understanding is 6-8 months so why the hell will the man not stand down and let an able person carry on?
My guess is he will stay in office till the day he dies as his spouse will get a msaaive payout watch and learn.....
im not into politics well i have to admire the man,why step down and sit at home getting depreesed for the next 6months or year or doing nothing with yourself,if that was me id be working till i wasnt able to work... and i think most people with cancer would be in the same siutation they would work as long as their able for....

Probably the most able minister and a man with a huge challenge ahead of him ... And I dont mean the economy.
I wish him all the best.......
As I understand it, the malignant cells are not in the pancreas but the blood vesels leading into it so it may not be so bad. About 80% of all tumours are actually treatable.
Most people on here will know that I am no worshipper of poiliticians but from what I have seen in the last year, having been handed the poisoned chalice of exchequor, he has managed to make a lot of difficult and unpopular decisions and yet maintain his integrity. I would argue that he's probably the best we've got and that he is perhaps the only politician in Ireland capable of sorting out the ecconomy.

Well I think he should just leg it and enjoy whatever time he has but maybe work keeps his mind off his health issues. I have to say that I was disgusted at TV3 rushing to run this story. I think it was pretty inhumane of them to put a time limit on broadcasting it. I think every one deserves time to break news like this to their friends and family in private and at their own pace. Andrew Hanlon it would appear has no morals JMO

I wouldnt have questioned the mans capacity to run our financial affairs until he was diagnosed, I just want somebody fit and healthy running the show

All the main media desks were forwarded a press release detailing the news of Lenihan's illness before Christmas Eve. On this press release, it was clearly shown that there was an embargo on reporting of same. TV3 were the only ones who broke it knowing full well it would appear to the general public as their scoop. I agree wholeheartedly that it was cruel and unfair and it shows TV3 up very badly.
I remember Mo Mowlam battling cancer some years ago yet she held office for years without seemingly ever slowing down so I am every hope that Brian will carry on as much as possible

i think its ironic that mr lenihan was robbing off the poor the past 2 years... he made thousands of families lives hell... i dont wish ill health on anybody and i hope he is ok, but what goes around comes around... now all of a sudden, mr lenihan has to come back down to planet earth and know what pain and suffering is like.. but i am gutted the man got cancer, it must be awful for him and his family.. and tv3 should be ashamed..
i personally think your wrong brian cowen is our taoiseach he is our leader he decides what goes and makes all the decisions and tells everyone else their job!i dont think brian lenihan should be blamed but i do think he would make a better leader than our present leader

mr lenihan is the minister for finance... its his job to look after irelands money, not brian cowen..
its probably a giant decision but brian cowen has the upper say
robpacciani: not when it comes to the budget decisions.. that is up to mr lenihan, then just granted by cowen... if thats the case, why have any ministers???
