He said he would pay me back 50 per week so i said grand.
2 weeks went by and he hadnt paid back a cent, so i ask him again. He changes his story and says he will pay me the whole lot on a Thursday, this is about 6 months after i gave him the money. On the Wednesday, he fekked off back home to England.

In that case then his lie resulted in a con and hence a reward to his gain; we may be onto something here.

Maybe so but to be honest i havent ever seen him abusive so thats why i have no problem with him.

When a lie results in someone elses misery to fuel somebody elses gain, thats a real nasty lie.
I heard some great tales off people over the years and came across some Walter Mitty type characters who try to impress with their outlandish stories and daring deeds, reckon they are just trying to make themselves feel important, best one I heard was off an english bloke who reckoned he was ex SAS and told me that the final passing out test was that he and 19 other of the top 20 paras were taken up in a plane, when they reached 20,000 feet they were ordered to remove their parachutes and throw them out of the hatch, then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, they were told to jump and glide through the air and find a parachute ,, heres the best bit,,,,only the ones landing with their own parachutes were considered good enough to join the elite force, like ok yeah you are going to throw one away if it hasnt your name on it,,

mostly i encounter lies from people who wish they done something in there lifes but failed to do so, by lying they are not only attempting to convince others, but themselves

I agree with you...I think that people who compulsively lie are sad people who actually believe their own lies and are very unhappy with life...its really sad I think

But leaving aside the small fibs doesn't address the issue of why some people tell elephant sized porkies. Any insight into it or first hand experience of people telling lies to you?
