I was talking with a CS friend earlier on the phone and somehow the conversation got around to headaches. After sharing our personal experiences with headaches and migraines, he suggested I post a thread with some tricks my physical therapist taught me that have really helped me.
One of then is to take 2 tennis balls and put them in an old sock. Then tie the end tightly and cut off the excess. When you feel the first onset of a headache coming on, simply lie down flat on your bed and place the sock under your neck right at the base of your skull. Try to relax as much as possible for several minutes. For me, I can almost feel the pain subsiding in a very short time. Try it.....it may work for you also.
The other is to buy a childrens blow up beach ball........about a 16" diameter one. Air it up about 2/3 of the way and again lie down flat and place the beach ball under your neck. Slowly rock your head back and forth only as much as feels comfortable to you. This seems to work well for those tension/stress headaches we all get from time to time and there is usually a tightness in the neck muscles that goes along with it.
Anyone else have any non-pharmacutical remedies for headaches and migraines?
the 2 tennis balls under the head need to be placed directly under the occipital lobe which is the place just above the base of the skull....not in the nape of the neck....
and not left there longer than 10 minutes..... do not fall asleep with the balls under your head.....
I wish i had read this thread the other night. I had to stay home from work yesterday with a migraine from hell, cold sweats, my whole body hurt because of the migraine and i was throwing up
because of the release that they produce and the rush of cerebral spinal fluid into the cranial cavity ....a prolonged period can dislocate the atlas and or also jam the occiput....so 10 minutes is best and then if need be do it again in an hour or 2...
Allergies could cause severe headaches too . Allergic headaches are often overlooked . If a prescribed dose of a common painkiller is not effective , speak to your practitioner and ask him to consider allergies as a cause . There are many types of antihistamine remedies available . In case of an allergic headache a single dose of a prescribed remedy should show positive results within 30 minutes
