Obama just signed a new healthcare bill and there has been alot of talk about it. Unfortunately, there has been little talk about the healthcare of our men and women who serve our country during war time. Obama earlier on wanted our veterans to pay their own way for healthcare very mad, but that fortuntely that was shot down. However, nothing I know of has been enacted to enhance the healthcare our returning veterans get. This country spends billions restoring other countries, yet our veterans are ignored. As far as I'm concerned, they should get the best possible care there is. If they need an artificial limb, they should get what they want, not what's budgeted. They should be able to see ANY doctor of ANY discipline of THEIR choosing, not just what's budgeted. Whether it's physical, mental or emotional help they need, they should get it and NOT have to carry the burden of worrying about paying for it. If our senators and congressmen get the best, why should'nt our military personal get the same? If they suffered harm as a result of serving our country, we as a society should be willing to make sure they get the necessary care they rightfully deserve. Also, while serving overseas, they should'nt have to worry about their bills being paid and food for their family. Their lives depend on them being focused 100%. Laws need to be passed where their homes CANNOT be foreclosed during combat duty, utilities cannot be turned off and food for the family is available. Many of our service people had high paying jobs and were the main source of income before deployment to active duty from the reserves. If we don't take care of our veterans, what kind of society have we become? What kind of example have we set for the world. Are our military personal nothing more than expendable citizens? If that's the case, why serve to begin with? cool

I think, what you will find he was asking of the Health Insurers was to pay or refund the VA hospitals for the treatment of those they already covered instead of the burden on the Govt taxes/funds.

Again, 'facts' presented went unfounded..in my opinion.

I agree with the treatment of theirs against ours.

I'm a Vietnam Veteran. You wouldn't want to know about my commenets about the V.A. or this government on how we are treated after serving this country in a combat zone, and what fowllows after wards in civilian life, or during duty with their families. Now, if you are veteren who has sereved diligently you ought to have some kind of better info.

I'm also a VietNam Vet and I gotta concur with Menu2, you don't want to know how we have to in many cases beg and plead for the treatment we need. Sadly in some cases we never get it. Also I might mention the shall we say less than sanitary condition that exist or have existed in some facilities, although the VA is working to correct this. Seems that bad press has finally got them moving in the right direction. Want more specifics, e-mail me..........wave

menu2: Everyone has opinions, if I were to commnet on how U.S. Veterans are treated they'd be true facts, and makes no difference how much time was put in militarily.

Did you read my post correctly?

The OP posted information and I asked him where that info came from.

I then posted two links that DISPUTE the OP original post.

I have NO idea why you are lambasting me! laugh

I've not said one thing against the Vets or the VA, I was merely pointing out that the OP's information is incorrect.

Deacon,if you have updated info, perhaps you might want to post it here. I started this thread to show my appreciation for ALL veterans of ALL wars with hopes of bringing to light some of the cracks in the system that caused many of you undeserved hardships when you returned home. Obama even considering veterans paying for their own healthcare after returning home was a slap in the face to every American! Walter Reed Hospital being considered top shelf health care, not to me! If our veterans can go to ANY hospital and see ANY doctor, why were they at Walter Reed? As far as where I get my info, two places 1) somebody very close to me worked for the VA and never failed to come home every day with a heart breaking story. Second, the news. As a final note, I think there should be a Veteran catagory all it's own next to the Current Events & Politics Catagory. In front where everyone can see it. It would make a good Information/Sound Board. There are enough veterans to make it worthy of a catagory of it's own Also, the US has military personnel stationed all over the world and I'm sure there are more than a few looking for love or just someone to talk to. The Veterans catagory can be broken down into separate countries if our allies would be interested. The next time you get an e-mail saying you got mail, reply that you want your own catagory. You earned it, you deserve it and I think it will offer help to other veterans that they may not find elsewhere. cheers handshake cool

I still maintain that is not quite correct. WHERE did that derive from?

I am not against ANY vet receiving free care, they SHOULD get free care and the best that they can get, that goes without saying.

I am just interested in where your info about the above came from.

I still think you might be reading it wrong.

They are not saying you must TAKE OUT insurance...they are looking for the VA to CHARGE their current private insurance providers. They were not insisting or suggesting that serviceman take out their own private insurance.

Currently, veterans' private insurance is only charged when they receive health care from the VA for medical issues that are not related to service injuries, like getting the flu.

The argument for the proposal is that it frees up money for the VA by charging the private insurers, allowing the VA to spend on more services, said Joe Violante, legislative director for Disabled American Veterans, who opposes the idea. While there could be savings, Violante warned it also could lead to an increase in premiums for veterans with private coverage.

The evening news or one of the political shows like This Week. I started this thread to give respect to American Veterans. Your turning it into a political debate about Obama's policies. I also complained about Walter Reed Hospital that has nothing to do with Obama unless Obama did something to change the treatment our military service people were getting. I'm not a supporter of Obama, but I wasn't looking to trash him either. Just his proposed healthcare plan for our vets. If you have any info on anything Obama's done to better the lives of our military personel, please enlighten those who can use the info. But let's not turn this into a political re-election debate. beer cool

You are correct as to what Joe Violante said. Of course I wouldn’t go to the VA just because I have an ingrown toenail which is not service connected nor the flu. The only way the VA neglect Veterans is when doctors don’t write down the prognosis on service connected injuries, I have seen this happen to some of my Vietnam comrades’. First instance, I have a very good friend who was blown off a jeep by a landmine at Vietnam causing injury to his back, and was flown to Hong Kong Japan. After six months in the hospital he was flown back to the states. After coming back to the states he continuously had back problems. When he went to the VA with his medical records the VA had no records indicating he had been at Hong Kong hospital….this goes to show healthcare isn’t the way it should be for the Veteran. The only way my fiend could prove he had been at Hong Kong hospital was that kept he’s hospital wristband while he was in Japan hospital and took his service records. He had four back operations, and on his fourth back operation the doctors cut on the wrong thing. After two weeks of the fourth back operation he got constipated and was taken to the VA for medical attention, and was told to go home and take a laxative. That didn’t work, so about twenty-eight days later he passed out and was taken to VA hospital where he was told he had to be operated on quickly, he agreed and doctors had to cut sixty-one inches of intestines due to gangrene because of cutting the wrong thing to his back on his fourth operation…..it’s called malpractice through negligence from the VA. Now, if this is called good healthcare, I guess anything that goes is fine with the VA. There are many things we don’t know that goes wrong with the healthcare of Veterans and the VA, it isn’t funny. Note: No Veteran can sue the government, because you can’t sue yourself. This is the way it’s considered with the government 'We the people'.

Menu2:

That is my point in total, through their already existing insurance policies

By Sean Lengel The Obama administration dropped a proposal to require some disabled veterans to pay for medical treatments through their private insurance companies, heeding a chorus of outrage from veterans groups and Capitol Hill lawmakers who said the idea was immoral, unconscionable and un-American.

This is what the OP said in his first post and led me to read that Obama wants all serviceman to have their own insurance.

Obama earlier on wanted our veterans to pay their own way for healthcare

I still maintain the info posted differs to the factual truth.

I also STILL maintain that any serviceman/woman deserves Governmental support in medical problems...and should be paid by the people.

Being a 'nam vet, and ever since I have suffered permanent disabilities, not service connected, I can say the VA has done right by me. While it is not has fast as civilian hospital, private care through insurance, it also does not have the unionized civilian workforce who scam the system everywhere they can. I've watched it from the inside, working for a civilian assisted living home, and medicare paid over, and above the cost of everything the administrative powers could get by with.

The VA might be slow, might have some disconnections, but any veteran can contact their local American Legion organization, and there are vets there who will help you out. It is a big system, and you all know that hurry up and wait process. The vets are strong enough to endure, and if I were Obama, I would be tip toeing around them. Hate crime legislation, gun ban legislation, will not save him if he messes with the vets.

The VA hospital that I use is great, yes I do have to wait sometimes. If they can't get me in I can go see a civ Dr. Any Vet can go to the American Legion, we will help get you going in the right direction.

You wanted to know where that info came from on Obambi wanting for Vet's private insurance to pay for service connectd medical problems, so I'm sure you've already read prior to what Sean Lengel The Obama administration dropped a proposal to require some disabled veterans to pay for medical treatments through their private insurance companies. Verification is all you were asking from the OP as to where did he get such info not the up to date legislation. THE END
