sophiasummer: Hi Kattsrose, "Lifes a riot" a really cool movie, set back int he 40s, small time, called New Zealand made and a true event.

The Queen Street Riots – among the most divisive and violent moments in New Zealand's recent history – are to be brought to life

The famous incident in 1932 in which union leader Jimmy Edwards was batoned to the ground by police forms the focus of a new local drama, seen through the eyes of Edward's 13 year old son James who watched his father's collapse from just metres away.

Unusually, the drama will incorporate documentary footage of the real James Edwards, who recalled his vivid memories for the cameras shortly before he died at the age of 85.

It's directed by Ian Mune and written by Dean Parker, who has illustrated James Edwards' family story with both the music and the black humour of the Depression era.

Beautiful NZ movie..
Check it out sometime, let me know what you think...maybe....

Sophia

Netflix does not seem to have it. Too bad it sounds interesting.

We are trying to remember the name of a murder mystery set in the 1950s from New Zealand we saw a few years ago. Apparently it was based on a real crime.

opentuit: As older movies go, a favorite of ours is The Odd Couple (1968 Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau). I love Neil Simon's stuffl

I have not seen it since I was little. I think I'd like it more now.

It's not Neil Simon but have you seen The In Laws with Peter Falk?

I haven't. Although there are some that I really love, as a rule I don't seek out comedies. My favorites are like Goodfellas, Terminator2, Heat, Lethal Weapon, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, the entire Bourne series, Casino, Inside Man...

I have not seen many of those.

It sounds like you enjoy action movies? Katt likes the ones coming out of Asia. I'm not into the violence but to see how some of the actors move is amazing. I wish I was even half that agile.

Kattsrose: Our queue on Netflix is getting short. Does anyone have any suggestions of good movies we might like?

Neither of us are big on what is coming out of Hollywood over the last few years. We both like musicals, comedies and movies from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. We've seen some Bollywood and other foreign films that we liked too.

Ideas?

I love old flics and foreign films as well. My fave foreign flic is "Himilaya" Awesome! Ive always wished I had a copy of that one. wine

If you want movies that challenge one, see 'Red Sorghum' or 'Precious'.

'The Bridges of Madison County' is my favourite love story. Eastwood and Streep are brilliant in this film.

'No Country for Old Men' and 'Paris, Texas' are also good films.

'Oh, Brother. Where Art Thou' is a hilarious interpretation of Homer's Odyssey set in the Depression era U.S.A.typing

A corny title "True Romance" but you shouldn't miss it. Stars Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken. Some great scenes and very entertaining.
"The Blues Brothers"------- "Wild At Heart"------- "Fargo"------ "The Deer Hunter"----------- "Go Tell The Spartans"------- "The Jungle Book" an animation I know but it's a classic.
