I agree. I am now far away from my family and most friends. I am alone here in Canada and I am the one who will probably live with him, NOT them.

I think it is important to a certain degree. Family and friends should respect the choices I make (if they are safe and healthy) and try their best to let him fit in...then talk about us behind our backs!

It doesn't cross my mind to consider how my family will accept someone I choose. It is hard enough for me to find someone on my own. It would be next to impossible to think about how they might think about her.
