jac379: PS. Have you researched live donation, yet? Have you been to see a nephrologist yourself? Maybe you could do this before you discuss this with your brother. If his kidney failure is hereditary, you will not be a suitable donor anyway. Go and do some research, maybe. Looking is not a commitment. Jx
Jac,thanks,he is on a donor list, but he is not well at all, and only 37 yrs old,i don't know if he has the time, some of the donor lists, i have heard that sometimes it's yrs to get one? like 5 yrs or so?That's here in Canada?

PPS. If you'd like to know why I made the decision that I did, I'm quite happy to tell you in a private email. As my decision involved the lives of several other people, it would be unfair of me to go into too much detail about it in a public forum. Likewise, if you would like to chuck a few ideas around with someone who has done a tiny bit of the process, you are more than welcome to contact me.
Validity: There are 4 of us, but no one yet has actually gone in to see if they are a blood match yet, the family will be talking today,he cannot return to work, and cannot even cut his grass, i can't imagine what's in his mind, i'm working up the strenth to give him a call,i am scared
I'm sure it is difficult for the 4 of you in making this decision, but be assured if there is a blood match all will be great. For a time I used to help an older friend out, who went through dialysis for years. It used to take so much out of him, but friends, and family was his greatest help, greatest inspiration. While he has never received a kidney, of his older age, and placement on list of recipients, he is in his 70's now. I'm sure you all will make the right choice, has the rewards are so, so beautiful.

From information that I received from my local nephrology unit, this is often the stage that family members get to when they first look into live donation, when time appears to be running out.
I pre-empted this stage simply because of my dad's age - he's nearly 73, so time is an issue even though the peritoneal dialysis is working well for him.
Each circumstance is different and age, or relationship make a difference to your decision. At my dad's age, donation, or not, he may not have many years left. If it were my daughter who had kidney failure, I would extract my kidney with my own hands if I had to!
I also had to weigh up the impact that live donation would have on my daughter and the burden of responsibility that I would be putting on her. What if something went wrong, how would I plan for her future? Also, my daughter is now pregnant, but still very young herself - she needs me more. A painful decision to make, if ever there was one.
I had to weigh up the financial impact - could I cover the cost of being unable to work for maybe 3 months?

Validity, on the page where you receive email there are "inbox", "outbox" and "filterbox" tabs there. I sent you an email. Email goes into the filterbox if a person, region, age range etc is blocked.

Hi Validity. If it's any consolation, I spent three months at Mayo where I met many families whose loved ones were undergoing various types of transplants. Every one of those undergoing kidney transplants not only survived, but flourished after the fact. I have a neighbor who was there at the same time getting kidney transplant. He was literally on death's door prior to that because the original donor fell through and the delay was much too long. But if you were to see him today, you would just be amazed.
I know it's difficult as hell...but there are a tremendous amount of success stories out there.

I wish you were here in Spain as two of my close friends are kidney transplant specialists.
I´m in no doubt that your doctor there can give you all the advice you need, but if you have any specific questions please feel free to message me and I´ll seek out the answer for you.
