So what do people think of Spain as the world champions? They were the best team over the past four years so I think it is right they won the trophy.

Best team over the four years? I don't think so. confused

Yes they won the World Cup and the UEFA Championship but they are seriously lacking up front. Watching them in this tournament especially against Germany and The Netherlands proved that. Against Germany it was beautiful football, nice stylem, free flowing but ultimately let down by strikers (and I use the term loosely) who seem to not know what a goal is or they suffer from sever stage fright.

On the night Spain deserved to beat The Netherlands (and I wasn't shouting for them originaly but after De Jong's attack....disgraceful!).

Overall the quality of the teams this time round were quite bad. I was shouting for Germany but they too performed badly (or at least all their opponents bar two played worse). Yea, yea I know they were top scorers of the tournament but seriously, this worries me. uh oh

How can you say a team that has lost 2 games in the last 4 years were not the best? And those 2 defeats were complete shocks where Spain dominated the game.

Torres was injured at the World Cup, if he was fit they would have been as free scoring as they have been since 2006. They did not let in a single goal in the knock-out rounds, that shows how dominant they were. Then add in Barcelona winning 2 Champions Leagues in that period as well. Nobody has been close to them. Germany might match them in Poland and Ukraine in 2 years time, but they have been outclassed 2 tournaments in a row against the Spanish.

The quality issue comes and goes. This tournament is far from the worst. Italia 90 is still the worst tournament in history. The peak of modern football was Euro 2000 with the great Italian, French and Portuguese teams. Everything since Zidane, Figo, Costa, Nesta etc retired will seem weaker by comparison. That being said Euro 2008 is regarded as one of the most entertaining. Quality levels will always ebb and flow, some poor, some great.

Plenty of Catalonians like that. The final was the first time they have ever shown a Spanish game on a big screen in main plaza in Barcelona. Sure they even have their own "national" team too roll eyes
