mcneillm: Sounds like something is running on your laptop and hogging the CPU, making it overheat to the point of crashing. If you right-click on the taskbar at the bottom, and from the menu choose "task manager", then in task manager to into "processes", under the CPU column you should be able to see what's running heavily.
If you've McAfee, it would be the first possible suspect I'd tink of.
Is mcAfee that naughty - I knew it slowed everything down at times but it is endorsed by Dell and Toshiba - I have had to have two laptops swapped out with this overheat issue
Alexei23: The CPU column is that in percentage mine says "System Idle Process" and it's fluctuating between 96 & 99 everything else is either 00 or max of 05, my laptop overheat and crashes a lot lately too
I think I answered my own question I just had a dumba** moment

It's normal for the idle process to be close to 99, it's the rest of them that count.
It could be also a problem with the fan on your laptop isn't kicking in properly to cool the laptop.
merrilou: Thanks again Mac .. but the only little labels I see say "AMD,mobile sempron" Thats one and the others say "ATI" and the other is just a label for windows vista .
tartini: I have a newish Toshiba and it overheats alot.. am really dissapointed with it - have to power it down regularly rather than leaving it in sleep or hibernation and that seems to stop the overheat messages - its the 3rd laptop in a very short space of time for me and never had this problem with overheating before
My son had a Toshiba notebook that kept overheating and crashing too. He enquired about getting it fixed and was told by a couple of repair places not to bother as Toshibas are notorious for it and would be cheaper in the long run to get a new laptop.
He has a Lenovo now and has had no problems with it at all.

that would be mad altogether
My own laptop can get quite warm sometimes, I've only had the overheat thing a few times, usually from sites with a LOT of flash content on the pages.
As for mcAfee, some people swear by it, but I've always seen it hogging any machine its been on, the same machines that are rife with viruses, or is it virii? Anyways, I never believed myself it was much good, but that's just my opinion.

Both my boys use Linux rather than windows.
As far as I know Toshiba's are a terrible make of laptop, also Acer used be a few years ago, not sure if they still are
mcneillm: I've actually an Acer laptop here on the table someone wants me to sort out during the week for them. No surprise, there's Vista and McAfee on it ...
Our acer aspire was running slow till I upgraded to windows xp SP3 But it wouldnt be the best computer in my opinion .
PASSION8MAN: Dont buy from pc world dixons or currys they are just cowboys Ive heard tons of horror stories about them .
pc world are salesmen and know very little about computers just how to sell them .
dixons and currys are sister stores to pc world same people who own pc world own these stores .
just going on what Ive heard time and again If your computer breaks down your on your own all they want is to get them out the door .
sorry if theres any pc-world workers on here
Oh, you are so right! I have a Dell I bought from PC world and there was a charging fault. They would take nothing to do with the repair other than giving me a contact number for Dell. I spent hours on the phone sorting it out. They should have spent the time not me.
I have a friend who bought an ACER laptop with Vista installed. It came with a disc to take it back to XP which is what I'd love to do with this though I've upgraded to Windows 7.

Yeah they are total fraudsters
sorry to hear you got caught out bro its always the same story with pc world
You should have threatened to take them to the small claims court because they would rather give you a new computer than go down that road .
I go in there for blank disks and tid bits but would never buy a computer in there ever
