My laptop, my 2 bedroom PCs and my home theatre PC all have XP Pro service pack 3, whereas I've XP Pro x64 edition on my gaming rig.

Vista's too sluggish to be usefull, and windows 7 is too new for me to put trust in it.

Ya, I'm a bit of a mad scientist - I've other machines and spare parts all over the house.

Not into macs, so don't know much about them.

As for windows 7, anything after XP can be a real hog unless you've got plenty of horsepower. XP originally came out when PC specs were generally quite modest, so it can be easy to run fast, whereas I've never seen vista run fast on any machine i've seen so far.

I have a newish Toshiba and it overheats alot.. am really dissapointed with it - have to power it down regularly rather than leaving it in sleep or hibernation and that seems to stop the overheat messages - its the 3rd laptop in a very short space of time for me and never had this problem with overheating before

confused

mcneillm: Sounds like something is running on your laptop and hogging the CPU, making it overheat to the point of crashing. If you right-click on the taskbar at the bottom, and from the menu choose "task manager", then in task manager to into "processes", under the CPU column you should be able to see what's running heavily.

If you've McAfee, it would be the first possible suspect I'd tink of.

Thanks Mac ... but I can't even change a plug . I have idea what a taskbar is ? Also I don't know what the CPU is . Its annoying and I am fed up of it to be honest.

With a laptop, when they say it has a Celeron, Pentium etc, they're talking about the CPU. This is what one of them looks like
