penman: I urge you to read ANY history of the Second World War. The Americans were left in the unenviable position of ending it. This they did in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Read up on the Marshall Plan and then revise your glib comments about how they "believe their own publicity".

I read something about that before to be honest i think the Americans and the Allies in World War 2 had no option to drop the nuclear bomb because the war would of draged on for the next 2 or 3 years casualties would of been high for both sides of the conflict The Japanese would have never surenderd beacuse of there code of honour.

True. And Truman must have been haunted for years after by his order.
With the Marshall Plan, the Americans signed up to a restoration of Europe's infrastructure. In 1948, this figure was set at 17 billion dollars. The mind boggles to think of it's present day evaluation.

Well then. There's Ford and General Motors who had plants operating in Germany throughout WW2 and who were compensated after the RAF bombed them. There was IBM who data managed the concentration camp transfers.

There was the late arrival in 1941. There was the money they made from that war and the Marshal Plan you mentioned which the UK only finished paying off just under 10 years ago.

Had the battle of Britain not been won beforehand, when the Brits stood alone, there would have been no American involvement.

Then there's the whole sea war thing...U Boats, Scharnhorst, Prinz Eugen, Graff Spee,Tirpiz, Bizmark, breaking the enigma code, the invention of radar which hollywood are quite happy to take credit for.

Then there's the Nuremberg trials. Goering ran rings around the US prosecuter and a Brit had to take over.....but of course not according to hollywood. Do you want to talk about the botched hangings afterwards.

I can be accused of a lot of things but being glib isn't one of them. The US has invaded over 50 countries since WW2, never once having an exit strategy or do you see Vietnam or Korea as success stories?

Can I just start by parking your references to Hollywood. It's clouding the issue and, in fact, is an entirely different topic which I would be happy to debate with you.

Overall, you seem to be slightly outraged at the inevitable economics of warfare. Why is this? Why should the 'business' of war be any different from any other human activity involving commerce?

So, when we have removed your Hollywood thing and your melodramatic references to radar and some ill-equipped American interrogator at Nurenberg, we are left with precious little.

If you are intent on arguing economics, then the abstract notion of "victory" becomes irrelevent. It's an oft-quoted fact that the two "losing" nations in World War 2 (an Americanism or do you object to that too?) went on to become giants of industrial progress amid post-war austerity.

As for Korea and Vietnam, these were potentially active theatres of war long before open hostilities began.

Americans today do not refer to their nation as having "lost" these wars. They instead are deeply saddened at having lost countless brave men and women.

This sadness is quickened when we reflect that all of wars grubby dealings is carried on as if were another common thogh tragic economic endeavour.

By the way, the UK administration were damn grateful for the Marshall Plan and the date of its full repayment is just another treasury ledger entry.

As for North and South Korea, it reminds me of the North. A situation was set up that was always going to lead to conflict down the line. Difficult to know what USA should have done at the time, but ghettoizing NK from the world is not a good idea.

Yes, just like they HAD TO Invade Nicaragua, Grenada, Cuba etc. Just like they had to help install a fascist dictator in Chile. Just like they Had to make up stories to invade Iraq and Afghanistan, just like they HAD TO try to overthrow the democratically elected leader of Venezuela. Oh yeah sure god love those poor yanks, it's a tough old station, being the ever pure moral guardians of the world. roll eyes

No, there will not be a war between North and South Korea. South Korea will not rise to North Korea's bait.

By the way, the best film I have ever seen on the subject is "Joint Security Area", It's in Korean but well worth the watching.
