lifeisadream: Yesterday, I went to visit an alternative medicine clinic that has some elements of Mexican ancient cultures. Quite interesting their approach because they say that the mind and the spirit have to be healthy in order for the body to be healthier too.
That would be very interesting to delve into. You've just made me think of that ancient aztec grain, 'amaranth' which is full of ancient health giving goodies.
Cant eat the hoof lol, unless your teeth come close to an alligators with an attitude problem. but yep, pickled pork is pretty tasty, along with ox tongue, beef heart etc ... the odd things we eat huh. Personally I think the trotters are better than the tail (chewy) or the head ( not to happy with my food staring at me) SO not going to try maggotty cheese though!

It's quite something else to be confronted at a local eating house, with something like that as you cast your eyes about. Imagine, there you are, silver service, and walk past maggot cheese in the finest of bone china bowls, or pig's trotters/feet/crubeens
Years, when I lived in Madrid for a few months, one vision that will remain with me forever, was at a local eating place. I looked up and there it was. A whole sheep's head, eyes and all. I think it was the appetiser!!!

venere08: Well, I'm in England next month, so I might get a chance to try this udderly different kind of culinary delight.
I think that you will find it very hard to find as it is not a dish that is very well eaten over here. It is more of a cut that usually ends up in sausages.

Thanks for the pointer. I will make sure to avoid the sausages then
Unless of-course they are chicken and spinach with pine nuts

Australian aboriginals eat witchety grubs for that reason. Best eaten just fresh from the ground and still wriggling. A nutty taste, I'm told. Haven't had a chance to try them yet but I have an open invite by a traditional member to take me out fossicking when next I'm in Alice Springs in the Aussie desert.
ladyfingers: i learned today that if you are driving and keep your eyes open while sneezing 7 times, that your eye won't actually pop out like mom always said
Bet you were relieved!!!
p.s. did you know that if you have a car accident, one saving excuse you can use if you rear end someone, is that you were sneezing at the time, as it's an involuntary bodily function!
venere08: Strolling past a stall at our fabulous Central market, towards closing time, I stopped at the organic produce. My eyes strayed towards some meaty bones with a clear plastic cover, and then to the label in front which said:
:FEMALE PIG'S TROTTERS How intriguing, I thought! How does one tell, and why should it matter whether the trotter belonged to a boy or a girl pig???
I just had to ask the rosy cheeked lassie behind the counter.
She was most accommodating, and treated the matter most seriously.
Her answer:
A female pig's trotters taste sweeter than the male's. Aslo, the male trotter meat smells awful.
So there you go
Everything you wanted to know about a pig's trotters, but were too afraid to ask!
