If he is still single and you are both in touch..ask him to link up for a beer as friends..If he's not single ask anyway...What have you to loose.
Loads of people will tell you time heals..(thats a load of balls..you'll never forget..) And if don't ask him out..You kick yourself for the next 60-70 yrs wondering "What if..?"
Ask him out just as friends and normally within the first few mins you'll know the state of play...
