Medsummer: The Magicjack works pretty good over here in Italy. Calling back to the states with it right now. It is tied to the computer on the internet and not portable like the cell phone. Still, this is the first one I've seen and it is NICE!
amend that to say it is for calls to the states only!

What I have done with mine, is to have it to call forward all calls to my cell...portable enough for me. Plus you can dial the local number from your cell...or any phone...and call the person over seas.
You only need one computer...(the end that has the unit), no additional soft ware...I love mine...especially with the additional features...like 3-way, caller ID, I forget the rest...but it's the closest thing I've been able to find as a regular phone. The only draw back is that the computer that has the unit has to be on, and online. hey...but for $20 a year..I'm not complaining.

I'm not to up on it as it is not mine and not for sale over here. What your saying sounds pretty good. Once I leave here soon, my computer time will be perhaps non-existent so I'm really trying to get rid of every thing I don't need!

You should be able to call your local number, and it should ring in the other country...as long as the computer is on...and the magicjack is connected.
I've never tried to call anyone over seas...but it should be like a local number (since your calling your local number selected)
Like I said...I haven't tried calling someone that had one over seas..
bittersweet28467: you can get the new iphone and use skype... :)
That's what i've been trying to say all along and it doesn't have to be an iphone. I have a nokia and i have a skype app installed on it and i can call any skype user for free (as long as i'm connected to the web or am in a WiFi zone.
Now after Med's post I'm realizing why Grandepensees was on about charges as he was talking about redirecting your Skype call to your mobile, what we're talking about is no redirection but Skype DIRECTLY on your mobile phone. I also use Fring on my mobile phone (Fring = Free Ring @
) and you can also do free voice or video calls and chat worldwide to any other user running Fring on their smartphone. Then again both parties have to be set up this way so maybe the magicjack suggested by our friend could be a good option there.
trulee01: I've been searching all over and still not sure what cell phone company to choose.
Sorry Truelee I haven't heard of one that goes from country to country ... But you can buy an international calling card and speak to your girl for about 45 minutes or so . Easy peasy ,lemon squeezy.

Yep, understand that one. I myself am not a big fan of having internet on the phone. It's just one more charge to pay for that I wouldn't have time to use that often as I'm usually out of range of cell phone connections.

Living on a small island apparently DOES have some advantages after all!! At least I have cell phone connectivity practically all over the place and with WiFi at home and in the office plus an increasing number of free WiFi hotspots all over the place, one can just get away without paying for internet connectivity. Kind of fun to carry CS with you all day to read all the nice threads, lol!
