Zackman: The reality is that however we dress it we are still animals at heart and have not moved away from the caveman era. Don't be misled. It is dog eat dog or cat eat cat and ultimately, it is everyman for himself. Look at the immensely strong opposition President Obama faced when he tried to introduce a law that would entitle every American to free health services. Also,do you know that they say that the U.S. Defence budget for 1 year is enough to eradicate hunger and famine in the world once and for all ... but the U.S. prefers to buy arms instead. Do you also know that land mines whose sole purpose is to amputate people's limbs in warfare and thereby incapacitated them and make them a burden on the state for ever and have incapacitated thousands of peoople in Cambodia, Angola, Rwanda, Bosnia etc are manufactured by Western countries principally the United Kingdom and France. One brave woman the late Princess Diana waged a campaign to stop the production of land mines but she was ignored. The English governement informed her that it was none of her business and that secondly if these land mine companies were to close down .. it would lead to unemployment of all the people working there producing landmines for the amputation of people's legs. Does this sound unreal? Unfortunately, it's true .... dog eat dog! Also, gone are the days in relationships where we just loved somebody for who he or she is. Nowadays, the women especially are only interested in "falling in love" with the perfect species which seems so hypocritical to me as love is meant to be blind or spontaneous or instinctive rather than calculative and premeditated. Nowadays, a woman will quiz and quiz you about your whole life history over and over again, desperately, desperately hoping she can find something negative there e.g. you have been in prison before or something .. so that she can politely give you the brush off and decide not to "fall in love" with you anymore. That's why so many women are single. There are lots of charming nice men out there but the modern women is not happy with that. Her love is a cold, calculated love ... of which I hope never to be a part of!

So why is women's love now more calculated and premeditated? If it is calculated and premeditated, can that be called love? or should it be called another name e.g. bargain hunting

plainlyjune: It seems to me, we encourage one another to be ourselves because we are beautiful the way we are. But when we start to see the imperfections, we start planning our escape.

So, are we that selfish?

Oy.. that's a philosophical question. I think humans are by nature selfish. It's the survival instinct, imo. You pick the person that is most likely to produce the healthiest children, etc., you are hardwired to think of certain food colors as edible or not, you are hardwired to recognize danger and so forth.

Since we do not have to depend on our instincts anymore, we use alternative methods to choose. Some are hardwired, some are not (environmental, moral, etc) and at the same time, we say that that is somehow bad. It isn't.

I do not believe that most people run at minor or even major imperfections. Perhaps it would be a good idea to define what those imperfections are.

The Objectivist ethics proudly advocates and upholds rational selfishness—which means: the values required for man’s survival qua man—which means: the values required for human survival—not the values produced by the desires, the emotions, the “aspirations,” the feelings, the whims or the needs of irrational brutes, who have never outgrown the primordial practice of human sacrifices, have never discovered an industrial society and can conceive of no self-interest but that of grabbing the loot of the moment.

The Objectivist ethics holds that human good does not require human sacrifices and cannot be achieved by the sacrifice of anyone to anyone. It holds that the rational interests of men do not clash—that there is no conflict of interests among men who do not desire the unearned, who do not make sacrifices nor accept them, who deal with one another as traders, giving value for value.

The Virtue of Selfishness “The Objectivist Ethics,

Living your life the way you see fit is not SELFISH.
What is "SELFISH" is that you demand other people to live their life the way YOU see fit.

I believe this was posted some time back by The Wall.

It was more in the line of personal events that can occur at a certain time while a person is in a relationship. A person may lose his/her job, or takes to smoking, or even depression.
