What if a person hacks a dvd player because of region codes or when a cell phone company has the monopoly, encodes the phone and thereby forces you to buy a new plan? Should a person accept that kind of business or would it be okay to hack the player or the encoded phone?

I should add that I think of digital equipment as computers.. before someone says that that is not what I wrote in the header. Sorry. I will be more clear in the future. Just dawned on me.

I know a mum who had kicked out her 18 year old daughter because she got involved with a boyfriend. Both myself and others comforted and chatted to this vulnerable daughter a lot during this time. She needed her confidence building after years of being made to feel inadequite by her mum as well as to feel confident about facing the outside world with little support. Over a year later her mum hacked her daughters emails and read her stuff. It resulted in her mum taking huge offense with people, threats of violence by anon men as well as one person being accused publicly of having some sort of affair with her daughter. Hacking is very unhealthy and it can result in those insecure hackers finding themself feeling even more paranoid and insecure than they did in the first place!

I have lost a WoW account twice to hackers. In both cases the passwords were at least 11 characters long with Uppercase, lowercase alphabet and numerals. I smartened up by changing my password more often.

i don't think modifying or 'breaking into' your own stuff amounts to hacking, i own that equipment and i feel vendors do not have a right to block me from modifying or customising it. First thing i do with any dvd player is remove its region and i customize all my mobile phones.
In response to: So what do you think about people hacking?
Should hackers be categorically prosecuted unless they work for the government or are employed by corporations?

Hackers can be good or bad, depending on who is hacking what.
Someone hacking into a nuclear plant of a democratic nation is probably a terrorist. Someone hacking into a nuclear plant of a dictatorship is probably good.
