Primula: Day 2 and its not as bad as yesterday, I have pains in my wrists and beside my ankles, I think my circulation is starting to work again properly, I slept a little, not great but I didnt expect to

Hang in there. The cravings should only last for about 20 minutes at a time though to you, that will feel like a lifetime. In time, it will stop being a craving and become a desire and then just a notion you can easily say no to.

But for the moment you are going through nicotine withdrawal. Google it so you don't think you're odd or weak willed.

And try not to think of quitting smoking as giving up something in the same way as a recovering alcoholic sees sobriety as a quality worth having. You are gaining health, energy and a good few fit years onto the end of your life God willing to one day share with your grandchildren!

captainSean: i bought those niquitin little losengers things.they are like a little pack of mints.I have only used 3 or 4 of them yet.
don’t rely on them their success rate is horrendous due to people just replacing the cigarettes with them , if you haven’t had one in a few days chuck them in the bin you don’t need them

Fraya: One can break a habit in an instant, given circumstance. Addiction counsellors have to make a living too Its always handy to know the objective of said research team.

The research teams objective iirc was to study how long it took with out intervention ie cold turkey (this was not restricted to just smoking) Yes I am aware habits can be broken instantly (instantly is a bit deceptive because there are other factors involved)

Ps
I had had a few glasses of wine last night grin

well done you first of all....

it will take a while before your sleep patterns return as your nicotine receptors are being starved and thus the cravings, like any habit that has to be broken, it will take a long time.

Many hurdles will be put in your way but only you can say no. Take each day at a time.

you're doing great girl - it does get easier.

I tried everything at the same time, Alan Carr, a self hypnosis cd and I went to bed really early (cos eves were hardest for me), I kept away from smoking friends for the first fortnight. Not sure what actually worked - self resolve and distraction combined maybe. Stick with it.

ah maybe it would be best to avoid alcohol for a while till ur in the clear I havent had a drink in 3 weeks and it doesnt bother me in the slightest .

I think you know ur in control of a habit when
someone offers you one and you choose to say no conversing

at the moment who do you think is in charge you
or the cigarettes ?

take charge

That's not really quitting and it never works. I smoked 40 a day for more years than I care to remember, and I truly regret ever starting.

Cigs are the most lethal and silent killer in many ways, and it's not all about cancer. Cancer is one of the possible outcomes, but there is an equally high risk of developing 'emphysema', 'high blood pressure', 'chronic heart failure' as well as blocked arteries, which often leads to 'a major stroke' and or, amputations - if you don't believe me, visit the surgical ward in any hospital and I'll guarantee you'll find at least two people who have lost either an entire limb, foot or toes - all caused by smoking. Take a visit to the Cardiac ward, and see the number of patients there .... a lot of them were smokers.

Someone may respond by saying that's all BS. It's not!! Nicotine builds up on the walls of the arteries and eventually (usually over many many years) will block the blood flow. While 'Stents' can be inserted, it is not a guaranteed cure. If the artery continues to block - then the blood flow is cut off and the only solution is to amputate.

I simply can not understand the younger generation smoking - with ALL the warnings and advertising, which wasn't the case when I was in my 30's, it simply beggars belief that a young person would even consider taking up the habit, that ultimately turns into an addiction, which is harder to break than a heroin addiction.

I know people say there is nothing worse than a reformed smoker - perhaps that's true - but you have taken the right step in first of all coming to terms with the 'addiction', with the willingness to quit, and I commend you for that alone. There is help out there, such as 'Champix' which has been suggested. That will deal with the 'Nicotine' already in your system. If you find the agitation while quitting a bit too much, go and see your doctor and ask him for a short course on 'Anxicalm', which is part of the Valium family. You only need a few days supply to overcome the anxiety - because anxiety is also a cause of increased blood pressure. Not being able to deal with the agitation/anxiety is the greatest singular cause for people not being able to quit fully.

Quitting isn't easy, but it is well worth it, and I wish you every success.
