sally101: you might get a under 3 from a dog pound as a lot of people dont understand what their taking on ..I bought my last one on Donedeal ....Grew up with them as a kid and had one in my late 20s early 30s and now a 8 month old in my mid 40s ..As in my original post - no luck with GSPCA and Ashton pound as I have small kids and it against their policy to rehome to families with kids under 7.
There's loads on DoneDeal - just thought I'd try and free up a place for another dog in a pound first.

Ive seen the odd free one on donedeal ..very rare but it does happen ...

have to go ive an itch ear that needs scratching laugh

I remember seeing a boxer/large breed sanctuary a couple of years ago - she was a private individual and for some reason I think she was based in Clare. Cannot find anything on google now though - maybe somebody in Clare might know? confused
thanks again

I'm not looking for a dog for free - from a pound I'd expect to pay and of course from a private ad as well. I meant it takes one dog out of the pound system - leaving room for another one that might not be so lucky otherwise.

You are an awesome person for making this decision!! Yay you!!
thumbs up cheering thumbs up cheering thumbs up cheering

Leitrim Animal Rescue is an awesome shelter who do great work and would happily work with you - find them at:

You can never go wrong with Dogs Aid either - again they do fantastic work - find them at:

And another good shelter is the ISPCA aswell - find them at:

Again your a wonderful person for making this decision, shelters are always best - why buy a life when you can save one just as easily!

Boxers are good with kids but any big dog that can overpower a child is still dangerous no matter how gentle it seems

Don't mind Abdul
He's mad
Anyway
Both my kids dogs came from the pound
Dogs are expensive to keep these days so goin to the pound is a good idea as they will pay half it's costs if it gets sick
And yer rescuing a dog that will just get put down otherwise
Ya know I loves ya asama bin laden with dynamiteteddybear

No problem - its great to see posts like this and I always give credit where credit is due - and you certainly deserve alot for this decision!! So again, yay you!!

I also know a few people in the Roscommon and Leitrim animal shelters if you are having issues they'd happily work with you in those with no problem.

Also, was just thinking - this is mainly a cat's shelter - but this lovely woman who runs it will not turn away any animal in need - so you could contact her and see who she might need help in rehoming - know you have your heart on a boxer - but it might be worth a call:
Marie is a beautiful soul and loves animals so it might be worth a call to her!

Also just happened to think of these guys aswell:

Again - your great for this consideration and if you need any help or guidance - please feel free to message me aswell.

At 14 months my daughter could wrestle Nico to the floor. It's a case of going with what you know and trust. Personally I'd never leave my child with a jack russell or a Yorkie (don't bite me small dog lovers.
I have no issue with my breed choice - it's just finding the right dog.

never ever ever in a million years could I or would I recommend a rottie with kids - it's a nature v nurture thing with them, the breed has some inherent characteristics that make them an unwise choice around kids.
I love dogs but they are one of the breeds that I'd prob never have. If I was single and had the space, security and time then it might be different.
I don't think any dog is "bad" - bad owners, bad choices, bad training is generally the problem.
Anyway, I want a boxer not a debate laugh hug

Well said - its never actually a case of what is in the genetics - its always down to how the dog is raised and trained, bad owners give so many dog breeds such a bad name, I've known plety of 'dangergous' dog breeds who when owned by proper owners never give any problems or issues regarding violence or bad behaviour, people think they know how to raise and train dogs - but so few actually do, its as simple as going to a class, or even just reading a book or on the net about dog training. I can highly recommend Leerburg who mainly trains difficult dogs and severely aggressive dogs and also has vast success with training police and miltary dogs - but any of his info will work on any dog in fairness, he has great methods and insight into issues and dog psychology. So that's my recommendation for anyone who has or wants a dog, if you dont put the time into training you wont be happy with your dog.

Again, I'm not here for arguments either (or at boxer at the moment!) But felt I had to support the OP in this great decision and again when I read the above post.
