this is info from a parrot site that gives human symptoms etc
from what i remember the incubabtion is 5-14 days or so but there is a possiblity you can be asymptomatic for a while after that. did he give you gloves and enough to treat your other birds? its easily spread between them seeing as they were in the same cage

Neenaw: From 1988-2003, 935 human cases of psittacosis were reported to the Centre for Disease Control.. this was in america, so nowt major to be worrying unnecessarily about.

wear a mask and gloves when cleaning out the cage, the disease is a respiratory bacteria so this is how it gets into humans, but i do think it would have to be a breakout amongst a lot of birds you would be keeping.

lets not over dramatise here people.. you would know by now if you had it, and the disease would have had to have been rampant for many weeks with hundreds of birds. seriously.

not necessarily, as the birds are in close quarters all the time and lady has been ill lately with brochitis it is possible she could catch it and its better to be safe then sorry. i dont think theres been any recent cases of people actually becoming seriouly ill from it but with your immune system already comprimised i would say its better to take extra precasutions

well if that is the case, then she should go and see an infectious disease specialist, she should also inform whatever bird society is in ireland that the risk is there.

Just cause the bird gets it doesnt mean humans will deffo get it, it doesnt work like that. If she has had bronchitis, she obviously took medication, which in fact would still more than likely be in her system if it was recent.

I just cant be doing with making drama out of things that can be explained, if you are that worried go to your doctor tom.

no i am not a vet. If it was this serious in Ireland then there would be a culling of birds, and this would be immediate. Did the vet cull your bird? Nope, gave them antibiotics, all will be well.

the disease is rampant throughout the country its one of the first things imported birds are tested for. it is zoonotic and therefore has the potential to cross over to humans. all im saying is its better to take the precautions then leave yourself potentially open to the disease. the fact that the birds and their urates etc are always in the same room means the risk is slightly higher is all im saying. theres no point going to the doctor and sying my bird has this treat me for it as there are specific tests that need to be done but can only be done when symptoms are showing. it cant hurt to wear gloves and a face mask cleaning them can it?

The largest epidemic occurred in 1930 and affected 750-800 individuals. This epidemic led to the isolation of C psittaci in several laboratories in Europe and the United States.

The infection is more common among individuals in the middle decades of life. (YOU ARE YOUNG)
