LadyinDublin: any vets with experience with birds??

Try ringing the DSPCA or an on call vet if it's an emergency.

There are for emergencies; check the phone book and it will give you numbers of vets who provide cover. The DSPCA deal with emergencies relating to animal safety and cruelty cases but not veterinary matters for pets or what they'd regard as trivial matters; still try them as a last resort or even your local Garda stations.

fluffed up does mean sick with a bird alright. a few questions they might ask you are
how old is he?
how long is he off his food?
has he lost weight?
is he still drinking the same amount or more/less?
is he still passing urates/faeces?
does it look normal(volume,colour,consistancy etc)
has he had any falls/injuries?
where is his cage kept?

you can keep him in a quiet, darkened room or cover his cage and it will lessen the stress on him

You have two choices. Wait till Monday & go to Vet or phone the Vet as an out of hours call & pay a fortune. It all depends on how ill the bird is. Absolute number one is to remove it from any possible source of draughts. Also covering three sides of the cage will reduce any draught effect.

Most would agree that this lady is the best bird Vet in Ireland

if hes still drinking and everything thats good. how many birds are in the cage and how long have they been together? are they a male/female pair? could be bullying which can take a while to show up but then suddenly one bird goes downhill rapidly. are any of the other birds showing and signs of illness

bairbre is the best avian vet in the country, much of what i know about treating exotics and what to look out for has been learnt working with her. if you cant get someone to see him tomorrow id def say give bairbre a call thumbs up

i have 7 of them in one of those huge metal cages. i dont thinks its bullying, they get on fairly well. i have 2 hens and 5 males (i did have 3 hens)

there all fairly quiet but they had their free time out today a bit late.

with many small birds the act of removing them from their cage can be enough to stress the bird out, canaries have been known to just keel over after getting out of their cage/avairy
