Ladybee42: just wondering after how the port tunnel construction was managed would we have any homegrown expertise that would be better than shell? and who would actually be in charge of these resources once we got them back?
We don't need to take the actual gas or oil back.. we need to be paid for our resources though.
Losty: If you visit the area around Belmullet that is at the centre of the Corrib pipeline you will find that the overall local feelings are positive towards the project and that they want it to proceed, regardless of where the refinery is.
Hiya, my point is though that we need to revisit the deal struck with the refinery companies....so that we, as a nation, can benefit from this national asset?
Jerry Cowley lost his seat in 2007 because of his opposition to the project in the Mayo area. The project seems to be generally popular amongst the locals in Mayo.
eh can we get past whether its popular with the locals or not? I'm interested in how we can make this one work for the whole country? Our resources. The rights to which this damned stupid government practically handed out for free... we need to get em back..not necessarily for supply here but for their value?!

im not sure if legally we can get it back, but maybe we could get a landing tax from it
"In fact, there is a worldwide trend of governments reclaiming ownership of privatised gas and oil reserves. In 2006 in Russia, the state-owned Gazprom took back control from Shell of the largest integrated oil and gas field in the world, Sakhalin-2, after Shell was accused of breaking environmental laws."
Relative to other countries we don't have many fossil fuel resources. We have no oil, no coal and a gas field (that we don't own) off the west coast that has ~ 15 year life span. We import over 90% of our total energy. However we do have massive wind and wave energy resources (among the best in the world) that is largely untapped. However I fear that Ireland will also sell the rights of these to international companies and the jobs for Irish will be making the tea and coffee for the employees of the foreign companies and so will be seen as a major success in job creation.
