Have you ever thought about how we sometimes say things and what they would mean to someone listening in if they werent from here.

For example in Derry people often say things like ....Im away up the stairs to throw myself down (meaning Im away to bed for a while) or

They called at the door when i was sitting in the middle of my tea - (They called at tea-time)

Is this Ireland wide or a Derry thing?

guess its down to what you listen to all the time and what you pick up

Think it is probably an Irish thing, I have heard both those sayings used where I come from (Cavan).
I love this one, Was chatting to a fella from Armagh one day, my brother asked him was the pub he was in the night before busy.
Yer man said..." Jaysus it was that packed you couldn't turn a sweet in your own mouth"
Another one in Kildare...about a bendy road... It is that bad you will see the back of yer own head going around it..
Donegal Version, again about a bendy road...you will meet yourself coming backcheering
I love all the different sayings, they have to be confusing for Non Nationals though.
