ybfayl: To be honest- sad but true, Aboriginal culture was not part of our education system when I was at school. I don’t know if it is now…. anybody got any young kids to elaborate further on this topic?

we learnt about aborigines in primary school .. in the context of the white settlers and how they treated the blacks .. we didnt learn about what the blacks did to the whites tho.. I learnt that later in life and not through school

and I had aboriginal friends when I was a kid.. they lived behind us in the burb I grew up and one of my best friends in year 8 was half abo

so I learnt a bit about them through knowing them and not all of it was good either drinking

If you get the chance, watch a movie called Rabbit Proof Fence.a 2002 Australian Drama, directed by Phillip Noyce. and it is a story based on a book Follow the rabbit proof fence by Doris.a very moving story how children were removed by Authorities in W.A from their families, and how these 2 sisters followed the rabbit proof fence back to be with their mother, and it showed you life and history of Indigenous and showed the hardship, and also their Strength and faith, and it is a film worth watching and it does give you insight into the culture.

We also have a tremendous amount of wonderful Aboriginal Poets, Jack Davis is my personal favourite.

I would suggest reading some poetic works to through some light on the philosophical background.

here is a link which lists some of our Poets.

There was and still is plenty of injustice committed as was sure to happen when a stone age culture came into contact with early industrialised cultures. But that has also happened against lesser industrialised cultures everywhere outside of the rapidly advancing Western European World. In fact the hunger for resources including cheap labour had Western Europe at war within itself constantly from early indutrialisation. Those continents where resources were easier to access such as North America and Australia faired much better in gaining their wealth and subsequent excess. Some of that excess has been used to answer injustices to the aboriginal owners.

I don't say original aboriginal owners because the lands changed hands constantly before and after European arrival. Just as they did in the Americas, Asia and Europe. Romantisising this fact down to a single living person being able to trace their ownership back 40 millenia is simplistic and patronizing.

The fact is that none of us "own" our own land. We are only there until someone stronger or more technically powerful defeats us and drives us off. And so it has been since the first hominid found that his neighbour had more game on his land.

The stories of tragedy in themselves are not Australian Aboriginal Culture. Aboriginal Culture is also the Murray didgeridoo, the Koori bull roarer, song and dance, bush tucker and medicine, the recording of history by painting on prominent rocks, the making of fish traps with rocks in the Koori lands. Culture is the succcess of art, communication and overcoming life challenges and the telling of that success.
