have already donated but unfortunately I am too far away to help out physically my heart goes out to all those poor people
I only just left brisbane on Saturday!!.. without sounding harsh.. I am glad I left when I did.. I might have been stuck there for quite some time and not have been able to get home ... I would have lost pay.. and got into a lot of financial trouble cos I couldnt have paid my bills.. so I am counting my blessings I left when I did .. also counting my blessings that all my family and friends there are safe and alive
I think the last thing the area needs right now is more people maybe wait untill the crisis eases then see what you can do , Most uneffected hotels and accomadation will be taken up with homeless Nice thought but perhapos a little premature

I agree with kizzy but your heart is certainly in the right place Tutorgirl. When the "mud" settles call or email volunteer organizations in the area and ask where help is needed then turn up armed with a shovel, broom, gloves etc and a esky full of food for yourself. $$$$$ donations help as we speak feeding those in shelters. Even $2 goes a long way if all the gold is put together.

they said that on the news earlier as well... to wait for a few days , let things settle because that is when the real work will begin

are co-ordinatuing the volunteer effort. Maybe contact them and see where they say the greatest need is and where.
My workplace (around 50-70 people) is holding a Morning Tea to raise funds, and hopefully Management will chip in with either matching our effort or at least topping it up, every little bit will help
well i cant help it, i love my country and it breaks my heart to watch the news and see it keep getting worse, seeing more bodies recovered...it breaks my heart. i sat there watching the news all day, everywhere that i went to run errands had tvs on with the news showing. (but all of those things you mentioned i enjoy too lol)
We, Short and I, spent day collecting toiletries from our friends, neighbours and family and took that into an Evac centre in Bowen Hills. Nephew and friend spent day filling and delivering sandbags to Northside and South Brisbane, and Vicky (the vet nurse), spent the day rescuing injured and terrified horses and moving them to safer properties, another friend has thrown her acreage open to anyone who needs a dry place for their horse.
Its huge, the people, the animals.... trust me there are a million ways to help.

Quite a few Sydneysiders I know are planning to do the same. I think we'll be needed when the water has subsided a little more, perhaps. Here's hoping we don't get more rain there. They've been through enough.
The mayor of Brisbane on the news last night said - we don't want money, come and help us! Fair enough too.
I'll cheerfully head up there if there is anything I can do.

That's awesome Shell. There is a huge relief I think, in being able to do something - anything - practical like this. Hopefully there will be more and more posts and tweets and things on telly asking for help so that people can get involved. It would be great to know if things can be posted and if so, where? I keep hearing that QLD evacuation centres don't want anymore stuff as they are overwhelmed with donations.
TutorGirl, that's an amazing attitude you have for a young un, but please don't lose sight that in the days and weeks to come, any help is going to appreciated obviously, but keep track of yourself and those around you...don't wear yourselves out too much, sometimes the temptation to help is overwhelming that you run yourselves into the ground and it takes awhile to bounce back. Remember to have some down time to stay fresh and alert, trust me on this, I know from personal experience and would hate to see that happen to others. But having said that,,, you go girl volunteers rule!!!!
