I need advice on finding a part for an old rifle.

Any ideas?

Searched Winchester already......it is for a model 1902 22 cal rifle that was a youth model. Not many made.

Needing a sear/extractor.

Wow - that is going to be tough to find I think.... rare rifle. Side loader in the stock? or tube feed along the barrel?

Maybe the Prof. would have an idea?

Will check with a friend of mine to see if he knows any good contacts for that though.

That.. is going to be a -very- fun piece to find, to say the very least. I will do my best to assist with this but can't make any promises.

A sear/extractor sounds like a part that any decent "gunsmith" could make fairly easily.

I'm talking about a real gunsmith here. Not those guy's who merely order parts and replace them and call themselves "gunsmiths".

I have a small lathe/milling machine myself and could probably make the part if I had the old broken part to work from, or a drawing of it. And, of course, if I had the actual rifle in-hand, I'm sure I could fabricate and fit a part to work. Any decent tool & die maker could do this I'm sure.

Trying to find an actual replacement part might prove to be extremely difficult. I'd look into finding someone to fabricate a new part. Try local machine shops or "tool & die" shops. Many are small businesses that will take on a job like that for a reasonable price. They probably won't be advertising as "gunsmiths" but I'm sure they can do the job. A gun is just another mechanism to them.

Thanks Abra.

I realize that acquiring the " real " thing for the gun might be out of the question.

Reproductions are probably available and I never thought about possibly making another one.

My father was a machinist and has equipment at his home.

The thought of having everything original just appeals to me, it was my grandmothers rifle. She lived to be almost 100 years old, hence, the rifle is very valuable.

Well, if your concerned about finding an original part I would suggest writing up a nice generic email stating your request. Then search for a list of gunsmiths on Google (especially for a list that deals in "antique guns") even though 1902 isn't necessarily all that antique for a gun.

And then send a copy of your quest to all those gunsmiths. You might luck out and find someone who has an original part on a shelf somewhere.

If you get right down to the nubby nitty gritty and can't find anything, then P.M. me and I'll put you in touch with a friend of mine - He builds blackpowder cartridge rifles and muzzleloaders and is one of the finest "from scratch" gunsmiths in Kansas. If he can build a new mainspring for my original 1832 dbbl. bbl. 12 guage to original specs., then making an extractor ought to be a piece of cake.

Good Luck!
