magsx: Absolutely! I love and am very proud of the fact that I can speak my country's language like other European countries. I think it is embarrassing for a lot of Irish people that cannot speak it. Which is why they opt to say it was drummed down their throat blah blah blah. It was drummed down my throat and I have no problem with that. Being young you can learn several languages without much difficulty. The amount of people I meet that say they would love to speak it and are now pushing their kids into Gael scoil. No respect for their language or culture..... any wonder Ireland is the way it is!!

Fair enough but the point surely is whether it should be compulsorary or not. Not everyone has the same view of it that you do.

English is OUR language in reality. Irish is very much a minority language, I can never understand why someone wants to force something they like on to people who don't like it.

I'm a big league of Ireland fan but how far do you think I'd get if I went into some pub on a Wednesday night and demanded that they turn off the English premiership match they're watching and go off to their local league of Ireland stadium instead!

You keep referencing ''force'' look basically I like many studied subjects that I was ''forced'' to study a subject that I didn't like or subjects for that matter! Ask a number of students it wouldn't be just Irish it will be the whole 2nd level education!

I think your forgetting a tad bit of Irish history here English was forced upon us.... Using this as an example when I travel abroad and English is not the first language I will learn spent something if only a few sentences in another language to respect other nationalities even if it was hello, please and thank you!!.... Its a shame you don't respect your own

English is not our language? I think you need to get out more! If you do go out you'll hear English spoken not Irish, (unless you live in the tiny pockets of the country which are Gaeltacht) That's the reality and millions are wasted every year on a pipe-dream that this can change!

Not sure what you mean in your second paragraph except that you're having a go at me, Irish enthusiasts always seem to do that with people who disagree with them!

English is not our language no. Irish is. English is more widely spoken but I have referred to this previously.

I have not had a go at you at all merely said that it is unusual for anyone to go into pub and make demands about anything, asking is another matter. I am far from a fanatic, merely VERY proud that I can speak my own language grin

English wasn't forced upon me, it's my native language, and was of my parents and grandparents too. Going by your logic I suppose you think that Americans should speak American?

The other subjects you were forced to study were beneficial to you, and they weren't taught on a dishonest basis as Irish is, the basis that it someday will be the spoken language of the people.

Well said! I think the Irish real sense of who we are and how much time, effort, energy, fight has gone into it! It is not a forgotten language and if this is ever the case well it'll be a very sad day to what we deem to be so ''Irish'' today

It was said to me once.. "They made us take their language, we handed it back to them and they did not recognize it".
A lot of our Irish sayings actually come from our Native Languageapplause

I can speak my own language too (English), not so good on foreign languages such as Irish. The whole point of my argument is that it is indeed forced, insisted on rather than asked! and a necessary requirement for entry to many positions.

If you are not having a go at me than why the wine glass emoticon and the remark about education? It's ok by the way, I'm used to being attacked, that's why I walk around with a crash-helmet onlaugh

Am not aware of any language called "American"........... and was also never taught Irish on that dishonest basis you refer to....... first I heard of it. But parents all over the country running to gael scoils do stand for something!

Will you be voting for FF even though they've traditionally paid lip service to the Irish language?

I'd love to know how many native Irish speakers were in Ireland in 1922 as compared to 2011.
