It is Fine Gael’s policy to end the Irish language as a compulsory subject for students in schools in the Irish educational system.

What do people think??

- for those that disagree!!

I'm disappointed and upset to hear this!!

I'm delighted.

I've been waiting years for it. It's not ending the language, just the compulsorary element to it. Ironicall it will probably be good for the language.

I agree. With it being a CHOICE subject those who really want to do it will excell and those who dont can do a subject of more benifit

It may surprise people to know that at one stage (not that long ago) if you failed Irish in the Leaving you failed the whole Leaving cert! regardless of your results in other subjects!

In case anyone thinks that this was in the distant past, this happened to my own brother, who is in his mid-fifties.

I don't see how confused

I think if its not compulsory, kids will take the easy way out and not bother. They should be coming up with new ways to teach the language and revamp the syllabus instead of making it optional in my opinion.

In a few years, i can see there not being enough students who want to learn irish so schools won't have enough numbers to make up classes and if that happens, the ones who actually are interested in learning irish won't be able to.

I think FG have shot themselves in the foot with this one because although it will be popular with the kids, most of them affected are not old enough to votedoh

Well they got it right when they changed that because it shouldn't effect your whole leaving cert but thats a lot different than making it optional or scrapping it altogether.

I suppose if they can set the agenda by getting people talking about emotional stuff like Irish then good for them. It stops people thinking about the real issues and on the real issues FF, FG and Lab differ only slightly.

I'd be more concerned about the 160 thousand million euros they are giving to the banks and what taxes they are going to lump onto people in order to pay for that but carry on talking about the Irish language, it's a good distraction for a party with the same policies as the FF ones that got us into this mess.

Yes I mentioned it to a colleague today he is originally from south Africa and is raising his children here, I mentioned it to him today and he really felt that for his children the dislike for An Gaeilge is driven by culture ''not to like the language'' I think driven by lack of passion, poorly skilled ill equipped teachings obviously not everyone but a number

I love the language my sisters children already are equipped with a second language, they speak Gaeilge at home and learn English in school And I will say this

For someone that studied in Irish for years all through my school years not to far behind me over ten years... but I had to painstakingly study nearly all subjects with books written in English and convert it to Gaeilge to sit exmas and hand in my homework in Irish!

I think it poses a problem for Children that have studied abroad and moved as they may have difficulties with the English language however if your starting out at a young age they absorb all that learning. My nieces and nephews didn't have any English when they started primary but even now have very strong English speaking & reading skills the eldest being 8 & youngest only in school this year already she's loads of English.
