Though I see the logic in what you say. one may also say that the road to your wonderful recovery was in fact attainable though you were not sure of it then. BUT NEVER THE LESS I SEE YOUR POINT.

No it´s not a waste at all.
If you are working towards a goal then be optimistic and carry on. If at the end of the day it doesn´t work out as expected then you have still achieved something and learnt by the experience, so you try again. Maybe something different, maybe the same thing in a different way. Don´t give up. If you don´t take a risk or try something different then you´ll always regret it.
