vinny1967: Well if people want to be part of the EU and all that entails, they have to toe the line.

To be honest I couldnt understand all the protestations over cuts going back a couple of years. Probably wont be popular for that opinion, but hey ho. If my income is £100 and my outgoings is £120 I either need to earn more money, or find somewhere to save money. The public service and Social Welfare need to be completely overhauled IMO.

I hope they dont stick their fingers up to the EU and do everything they can to repay the loan.

I have no intention of getting into a full-blown discussion or debate on this thread but I have to agree to a degree with you Vinny.

Yes public service (and I am one of them) and social welfare need to be OVERHAULED. Cuts across the board are not the way to do it though, in my opinion.

To be honest the best ideas I've heard for making savings and cutting expenditure have all come from the ground level staff, not from senior management. There are areas which can take substantial cuts, but there are areas where even small cuts would have disastrous results.

The staff at ground level have a much better understanding of what changes should and could be made, but either are not allowed to voice their opinions (as is the case where I work) or just ignored.

Politicians are cheap sales men in expensive suits selling ideas they know little about, to a populous they know even less about.Give the people a vote every five years or so, lie through your teeth to get elected, and then say the people gave you a mandate to govern. Whilst all the time making up excuses why you can't keep the promises you got elected on.

The only thing that has really changed is a single letter, FF has become FG.

They would make you seriously question whether democracy is just one big con job that others are getting rich on, whilst the people get ripped off.

Oh how I loath politicians, regardless of whether they are left or right wing. They have the opposite to the Midas touch, they can take a golden idea and/or opportunity and turn it into pure crap.

wave

I dont doubt the best ideas come from ground level staff. They are the ones dealing with the bureacracy on a daily basis and can see what procedures and so on are necessary or a hindrance in doing their job.

I just think that people see the benefits they receive as their right without thinking where the monies come from to pay for those benefits. Cut backs have to happen accross the board from top to bottom for the loans to be repaid and to get the country on a better economic track.

Maybe, just maybe next time the Celtic Tiger roars Governments and households will appreciate it more and learn that it is not a never ending supply and tomorrow needs to be thought about.

Hope your well C

The programme for government is bloody pie in the sky politics designed to ensure that it was passed at the Labour party special conference, as we all know the EU/IMF run the country now and it is possible that the IMF will order the incoming government to slash public sector pay and social welfare. FG and Labour don't run the country its Ajai Chopra and Olli Rehn that call the shots now.

One example last Autumn the greek (left wing) government agreed with the EU/IMF taht theyw ould only privatise about €7 billion of state owned companies, they have now been ORDERED to privatise €50 billion worth of state owned companies.

PersonalllyI think public sector pay and social welfare should be reduced to in line with the UK after a cost of living analysis has taken place, I'm sure that means a welfare cut of at least 30% and further public sector pay cuts of 20% across the board although I'd prefer smallr percentage pay cuts for lower paid public sector workers.

Irish people need to cop on that FG/Labour don't run the country its the EU and the IMF. I wouldn't be surprised if the FF scum did a aly deal with the IMF as regards the croke park deal before they left office.

I see Olli Rehn has acknowledged the case for a lower interest rate on the ECB loan for Ireland and Greece, do the EU mandarins fear Ireland and Greece could eventually default.

Portugal is a near certainty to have to request a bailout and if Spain falls then the euro is in serious trouble.

Its only a matter ot time before the euro goes bust and when it does anybody who has savings in euro will find that they have been devalued to a fraction of what they should be worth

A polish friend has recomended that Pat Rabbitee and Eamon Gilmore should be taken out as well because they supported Eastern European communist dictatorships in the 1980's, Gilmore was opposed to the Solidarity trade union in Poland that was trying to bring democracy to Poland in the early 80's.

Ken35: Hyperinflation eh?

exactly that happened to a lesser extent when we got rid of punt and took euro, we all remarked how less we could purchase with it, Instead of a pound shop its a 2 euro shop, Its the small things that add up, You look at some Eastern bloc countries today, In the ukraine you could have decent savings one day the next day government can devalue the currency so your left with only a fraction of what you should have, The Euro is stable now but for how long, Its a timebomb

The new government plans to layoff 25,000 public sector workers. Can someone explain to me how you grow the economy by making 25,000 more poor people?
