Ouattara forces begin Abidjan assault
Reuters

By Mark John and Ange Aboa Mark John And Ange Aboa – 2 hrs 39 mins ago

ABIDJAN (Reuters) – Forces backing Ivory Coast presidential claimant Alassane Ouattara began a fresh assault to remove Laurent Gbagbo from his last stronghold in Abidjan on Monday.

As the conflict escalated, France ordered more troops into the West African country to protect civilians.

A convoy of several dozen vehicles containing heavily armed pro-Ouattara troops and outfitted with mounted machineguns entered Ivory Coast's main city at midday, the first elements of a large force that had massed on the northern outskirts for what they called a "final assault," according to a Reuters eyewitness.

Heavy machinegun fire and a few explosions could be heard minutes after they entered the city limits.

The commanding officer of the forces, Issiaka "Wattao" Ouattara, told Reuters he had 4,000 men with him plus another 5,000 already in the city. Asked how long he would need to take Abidjan, Wattao said: "We know when it starts, but could take 48 hours to properly clean (the city)."

Gbagbo has refused to cede power after a disputed November 28 election which U.N.-certified results showed Ouattara won, but Gbagbo rejected the results and accused the United Nations of bias. The standoff that followed has now turned into a resumption of the civil war of 2002-03.

After swiftly taking control of most of the country, pro-Ouattara forces have met fierce resistance in Abidjan where Gbagbo's troops are holding on to positions around the presidential palace, Gbagbo's residence, and state television.

After several days of fighting in Abidjan, nervous citizens ventured out to get food and water on Monday morning after being holed up at home because of the fighting.

Speaking on Sunday on the pro-Ouattara TCI television channel, Ouattara's prime minister Guillaume Soro said their strategy had been to encircle the city, harass Gbagbo's troops and gather intelligence on their arsenal.

"The situation is now ripe for a lightning offensive," which he said would come any time soon.

France said on Monday it was sending an extra 150 soldiers to help protect civilians in Ivory Coast.

The deployment brings the number of French troops in Ivory Coast to 1,650. France has about 12,000 nationals in the country and the French military contingent has already mounted patrols in Abidjan and taken control of the airport.

It had been expected that Ouattara's forces would quickly overrun Gbagbo's troops following defection by high ranking officers, but they have managed to withstand the assault so far and regain control of the state broadcaster RTI.

Through the television channel, they have broadcast virulent anti-French and anti-UN messages, while rallying support from Gbagbo's youth wing, the Young Patriots, who have formed a human chain around Gbagbo's residence and presidential palace.

ARMY CHIEF FLIP FLOP

A Reuters reporter saw scores of Young Patriots gather by the lagoon near the palace with plastic buckets and bottles to collect water, guarded by jumpy soldiers brandishing AK-47s.

Gbagbo's camp has also received a potential morale booster with the return of army chief General Philippe Mangou, who had sought refuge at the residence of the South African ambassador on Wednesday as pro-Ouattara troops advanced on Abidjan.

More than 1,500 people have been killed since the violence began five months ago.

I've got to hear your theory on how this war is a big money spinner.

Lets see, aircraft that would have to be flown anyhow in order to keep pilots trained and certified, aircraft carriers that would be at sea anyhow conducting exercises, tomahawk missiles that would have to be fired anyhow to keep the crews certified, stock current as they have a shelf life as well as are upgraded ever couple of years or so.

So where is this big bonus Bollywood? The oil the west and India was getting from Qaddafi has stopped so it can't be for that so where is the windfall please?confused

War generates money and jobs .War causes increase in consumption which triggers increase in production, which decreases unemployment What countries use in a war and for a training cannot be compared at all .Its a naive thinking that the economy perish because of the war. actually economies of many counties thrive on war. Most of the things used in the war has to be reproduced at the factories at home , Including the Tomahawk missiles, the consumables, the machineries , The weapons used in the wars have to be produced ,the ammunitions spent have to be reproduced, which generate employments .All most all war equipments are produced by the countries who wage war at nothing sure enough sooner or later the reorder for the weapons will come back to them. Once the opponent country is ravaged then the money will come back as rebuilding contracts as well. See how "rebuilding of Iraq went to the American companies "

That may be true for some wars but nt all. This particular action has not generated any more consumption production than a regular training mission.

bollywood: What countries use in a war and for a training cannot be compared at all .

I did in the above post, please refute it with some hard facts rather than parrot the same stuff you always do.

bollywood: Its a naive thinking that the economy perish because of the war.

I agree. However, this is not part io our discussion.

bollywood: actually economies of many counties thrive on war.

Not this particular action.

bollywood: Most of the things used in the war has to be reproduced at the factories at home , Including the Tomahawk missiles, the consumables, the machineries , The weapons used in the wars have to be produced ,the ammunitions spent have to be reproduced, which generate employments

Already went over this. There's four thousand tomahawk missiles in service with the US military with an expiration date of fifteen years with regular upgrades coming on line every two years or so which is meshed in with this cycle. Every year, even at peace the older missiles have to be either trashed, used in training, seriously modified to the extent it's almost like buying a new one, or thrown out. The obvious choice is to upgrade some with new ones, modify others to extend their life as a high cost and use others in training rather than throw them out. What this means is that your above contention is wrong.

You can read about it here;

here;

and here;

bollywood: All most all war equipments are produced by the countries who wage war at nothing sure enough sooner or later the reorder for the weapons will come back to them.

So to you, a ship floating in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya is being degraded far more rapidly than a ship steaming around the Mediterranean in peacetime conducting training by firing older versions of Tomahawk missiles prior to their expiration. I see no logic in this. Perhaps you can explain.

bollywood: Once the opponent country is ravaged then the money will come back as rebuilding contracts as well. See how "rebuilding of Iraq went to the American companies "

A 2003 article about Iraq? How about a 2009 article about Iraq?

"Those who claim that the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003 to get control of the country's giant oil reserves will be left scratching their heads by the results of last weekend's auction of Iraqi oil contracts: Not a single U.S. company secured a deal in the auction of contracts that will shape the Iraqi oil industry for the next couple of decades. Two of the most lucrative of the multi-billion-dollar oil contracts went to two countries which bitterly opposed the U.S. invasion — Russia and China — while even Total Oil of France, which led the charge to deny international approval for the war at the U.N. Security Council in 2003, won a bigger stake than the Americans in the most recent auction"

As for Halliburton, they operate all over the world and not just in Iraq so if they were not working there they would be working somewhere else. To illustrate this, please list the contractors that didn't get a contract in iraq and show how they were instead,, destitute and unemployed instead.
