UN troops in Cote d'Ivoire take control of Abidjan airport: report
08:24, April 01, 2011

The United Nations troops in Cote d'Ivoire have taken control of Abidjan airport, media reports said on Thursday.

The reports quoted a security source as saying that the UN troops have taken control of the airport on Thursday as forces allied with Alassane Ouattara had entered the main city of Abidjan.

Meanwhile, the Ouattara camp has given his presidential rival Laurent Gbagbo a 1900 GMT ultimatum to step down.

Also.

Heavy artillery fire and explosions have been heard in the Ivory Coast city of Abidjan as rival forces battle for control of the city.

Abidjan - Troops battling around the presidential palace
Heavy artillery fire and explosions have been heard in the Ivory Coast city of Abidjan as rival forces battle for control of the city.
Former President Laurent Gbagbo has refused calls by world leaders to step down amid an offensive by troops backing the internationally recognised president Alassane Ouattara.
Residents have reported that mortar and other heavy arms fire broke out near the presidential palace in Abidjan yesterday afternoon.
The UN mission UNOCI reported two separate attacks on its peacekeepers by Gbagbo forces, leaving four seriously injured.
It warned its mandate allowed 'the use of force when under attack'.
While Gbagbo's camp claimed to have pushed back an assault on Friday, Mr Ouattara's fighters warned that the offensive 'has not yet begun'.
'We are taking steps to weaken the enemy before mounting an assault,' said Captain Leon Kouakou Alla, spokesman for Ouattara's defence ministry.
Elsewhere, at least 1,000 people are reported to have been killed in intercommunal violence in the western town of Duekoue.
The US has again called on Mr Gbagbo to step down immediately, saying he was pushing the West African nation into lawlessness.
'The United States calls on former President Laurent Gbagbo to step down immediately,' Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement.
'Gbagbo is pushing Cote d'Ivoire into lawlessness,' she added. 'The path forward is clear. He must leave now so the conflict may end.'
She added: 'We also call on the forces of President Ouattara to respect the rules of war and stop attacks on civilians.
'President Ouattara's troops must live up to the ideals and vision articulated by their elected leader.'
Mrs Clinton also urged the UN peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast to aggressively enforce its mandate to protect civilians.

Now I would say that WE ARE IN THE AREA.

As always JMOgrin cheers

tomcatwarne: At least 800 people have reportedly been killed in the Ivory Coast city of Duekoue, as violence continues. Skip related contentDominique Liengme, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in the country, said in a statement: "This incident is particularly shocking in its scope and brutality."

The ICRC said earlier this week that thousands have been killed or injured in post-election violence since November, which has driven up to 1 million people from their homes in Abidjan alone. Some 123,000 Ivorians have fled to Liberia and 5,000 to Ghana, according to the UN refugee agency.

Fierce fighting spread across Abidjan on Friday as troops loyal to Ivory Coast's Laurent Gbagbo fended off attacks by forces supporting Alassane Ouattara's rival claim to the presidency.

The ICRC said it condemned attacks on civilians and reminded all warring parties of their obligation under international humanitarian law to protect the civilian population.Democracy?

My brother was an exchange student in South Africa. He still has friends there today. Here's how he described African politics. He said that all the parties up for election routinely send out groups of guerillas armed with machine guns to all the separate little tribes and villages. They rough people up and make all kinds of horrible threats of what will happen if the people don't vote their way. Then, after elections, they send more guerillas to go around with guns and make good on the threats in the areas where they did not get enough votes. I think that's a a slight exadgeration and oversimplification, but basically sort of goes along with some articles about Africa that I have read. The more you know about Africa, the less you want to know and that's for damn sure.

I guess the real question, from a big picture perspective is - Are we ready to spark the democratic/freedom/revolution bit or whatever you want to call it, in the "black" part of Africa?

By "we" I mean the behind the scenes folk who participated in Tunisia, Egypt and the other places. If there is in fact such direction given.

If the answer is yes, then the UN/CIA activity in the Ivory Coast will escalate and the result will be that the president we want in will succeed and be an example for voting reform, a reduction in vote fraud, more international support for open fair elections, etc. It will give the people hope and could result in a Black Spring. Not to mention lower chocolate prices in time for Easter.
