My teenage son is eartning his own money and a full time student at Uni, He hasd recently decided to comute to and from uni daily rather than fork out the $1000.00 a month accomadation.I have insisted he pay me board of $70.00 PW
This includes everything internet, power, water, phone calls, food , etc etc etcI dont buy his clothes or toiletries
He reckons NONE of his friends have to pay board to live at home.
Just wondered if what you guys think is fair?

Yeah I tried too.......sometimes they did, sometimes they didn't.

Im not the hardest parent in the world when at times I know I should be.

They do need to learn responsibility though.

I just really suck at the hard stuff.

Kizzy I think you are doing your fella a favour. He is going to have to function out in the real world and paying for rent and utilities is part of that.

My parents charged us kids 10% of our gross earnings for rent and utilities ... which is actually VERY cheap (but there wasnt internet, paying for water and such), but it taught us the lesson that we had to have the dollars for expenses.

I think thats fair Kizzy.

If his other friends don't pay board then their parents are and will constantly be wiping their arses for a long time.
Sometimes their are times you need to cut the umbilical cord.

Try $150 week and you're probably getting closer to what he costs you, but still way off the $1,000 it could be costing him elsewhere.
Making it more realistic softens the blow when he has to go out into the real world.
You could pull $150 week out of him and tell him you're banking the $80 difference between what you suggested - $70 - $150.
At the end of the year he'd have $4,000 in the bank to play with.

My 16yo pays board. I receive his Austudy as he is still at school and he works after school/weekends. If the money he earns reduces the amount of Austudy he gets then he pays $50 a week plus he is also responsible for his own mobile phone bill. I was originally charging him $50 every week but all the casual hours were cut and he was reduced to only 3 hrs per week so he wasn't really earning much money at all and it wasn't fair. My second child is currently seeking a casual job too and he will get the same deal too.

You son has it good, don't let him take you for a ride and play his friend's parents against you as you are doing the right thing for you and him. wine

When I was living at home we where not charged board. But boy did it tell when I moved out. I had no idea of the cost of living. The first place I rented was kicked out only after three weeks. For not paing the rent. The lecy compainy was chasing me. So it was steep learning curve for me. Yes charge them board. And adjust it once your next bills come in. As with him living there you can bet they will go up.
My sugestion in $80 per week and then plus the utilitys.
If her wants to live on a caivar lunch with a beer budget then see how far he goes.
