The site has software that recognises faces. It will centre the picture so the face is visible in thumbnails.

No, I've been involved with a few forums. I was thinking someone could have access to my email account, but why would anyone mess with my pics? If that's the case, they really need to get a job or something...

They like to show pretty centred pics of faces, or blanks, for uniformity. They have explained this before, long time ago. It just gives a good impression and makes the site look professional.
