He does have a point though, I dont like jokes about mental health issues myself, I think its in bad taste considering the amount of people out there with a mental health disorder, look at the suicide rate this past few years, should we crack jokes about suicide too?

If you knew anything about humour, which you clearly don't, you would know that humour is a deeply subjective thing. We all have our no go areas that we just don't don't find funny. For me that is mental health. I just don't find jokes about it funny. What you have made the mistake of doing, is confusing someone saying they personally find something offensive with them condemning the joker. For some people this is not as touch an issue as it is for me or others. Just because I find this joke grossly offensive doesn't mean I don't understand that no harm was intended by it.

There is another element here. You can't tell a joke effectively on an internet forum, it just doesn't translate all that well a lot of the time, so the type of things that a good comedian with impeccable comic timing can get away with, is not so easily replicated in the written form.

scriobhneoir: No one has a monopoly on suffering, regardless of what age they are. So you are no more entitled to lecture us as the other way around. I have deeply personal reasons why I would never ever joke about mental health or laugh about it either. You don't feel that way, that's fine. However we are all different I was merely pointing out that some of us do find this type of joke offensive. Not saying that everyone was obliged to be offended.

Point taken !!

I still think there's nothing better than a wicked sense of humour. Good for your mental health too. Ask any shrink !

Yeah, I acknowledged you didn't intend any harm by it and as such there was nothing personal in my response, just saying that some of us just don't find these type of jokes funny. That's all.

I tried to send you a private email there Biggles, but couldn't. I was just going to say, I am aware, as are most people here, that you didn't set out to cause anyone offence. cheers

Absolutely no need to apologise!

Some people want to police other people's humour, if I don't like a thread or a programme on TV I simply switch off/over to something else!

No one is policing humour here. Policing humour would be saying "That is wrong, take it down" I was merely pointing out that for many of us, these jokes are offensive even if we defend the right of people to tell them.

I could not in clear conscience let the thread pass without registering my personal distaste at the joke, that is entirely different to trying to police what people can post.

iwas married to a man who spent many years in psychiatric hospitals (sometimes involuntary) and i got to meet and know many of his fellow patients....... I have to say that most of them had a great sense of humour and many laughed at their own condition. In any case walking on egg shells around people with mental health issues does not do them any favours and can be viewed as patronising
