I think it may have been an earlier thread but this is my own experience . Last night I took my car for its NCT to the local testing center , I had no real concerns of it failing as I had it checked over recently by my local trusted mechanic . But they failed on the handbrake 'by a very narrow margin' . Now........ are we the ordinary citizens to be subjected to a backlash of NCT failures based on very narrow margins and minor issues because of the investigation into NCT practices by the PRIMETIME team in RTE . Yes I think so and I was one of the first .devil

Your car failed... get it fixed. Dodgy handbrakes DO cause the car to slip and roll when unattended. A couple of tons of rolling metal dunno That's gotta do some damage.

I brought my car in a few wks ago and it had a few things wrong with it, fair enough, I went away and got new, well, everything so it seems from brake lights, discs, lines, shocks, ball joints, wipers sigh, you name it, I got it, including repair to a little rust forming on the offside.

I took it back, the same guy in the NCT centre tested it, went thru it with a fine tooth comb, then he got to the rust part which my mechanic had repaired. This guy proceeded to bang and bang and bang at it with excessive force with his spanner until he made a little hole in it.

With great pleasure he told me it had failed becoz of this, I had to back to my mechanic who was furious. This time I went to a different NCT centre to get the repairs checked, the guy came out, took his 2 fingers and pushed against the affected part, then lightly tapped it with the back of his screwdriver.

Then it passed - saw the expo in Prime Time, I for one was not impressed.

I would give my right arm for it to something that small and insignificant.

Modern_Fairy: im not usually a suspicious person but i reckon thats the case in some cases.. i brought mine knowing it was gonna fail but had to do the nct .. went to rebook it and they had no available date within the month.. the gave me an appointment 3 days after the limit for it to be half price.. i payed to get it fixed in garage they still failed me.. told me to rebook within what ever time.. my sis bf had brought it to the center that time.. his whole family are mechanics.. they see how it failed.. i went back to my garage they told me they fixed the problem they dont see how i failed either.. had enough of the car and traded it in with one of local dealers down here.. they took it with no NCT... why they said they dont see how my car failed nct and that if they were to put it through it would pass.. wheres the logic in that

They expected you to keep retesting the car spending a fortune on silly little problems that are not going to affect the safety of the car, I dont know how they can get away with doing that to peoplefrustrated

They are going to be way more cautious and probably overly cautious now thus likely rise in nct fails! even if the indivduals are testing were actually honest in the first place

I'd very quickly tell him where to put his screwdriver . Seriously though it was a rather determined effort to pull in another re-test fee . I'd chance reporting that .
