So accessible I don't even bother to try to make an appointment for a routine check up in my small city but rather travel forty five minutes to the nearest large population center where I can get seen in an hour and a half in one of their walk in centers.
Cost to me is my taxes which are far higher than they would be in the US and, the extra three hours traveling time which equates to a half day's pay so, pretty much a half grand.
As in my friend's case, he spent a year waiting for a routine hernia operation during which time, it could have strangulated and killed him. Of course, he was off work the bulk of that costing him tens of thousands of dollars but, our health care system is really good some say.

I feel for your friend- I could add a few pages of similar examples. I know people who are having trouble getting access to cancer treatments.
However- this isn't the States, where your friend's great-grandchildren could end up paying for his medical costs.

No it's not. However, as an adult, with a lower tax rate, private insurance and more competition he would have been in and out, less cost and less time missed at work. Probably been able to work enough to keep up the payments on his private insurance so that if and when he got cancer it would have been taken care of first class in one of the world's best clinics rather than some hole in Winnipeg or whatever. Unlike what Cretien got when he showed the world where the holes in our health care system are by stealing a government aircraft to fly to the US and use their system instead of our own.
