I think, it depends on what time you consider marriage or living together. When you are young , have children, it makes sense(for me, because I'm old fashioned thinking), but today this piece of paper isn't necessary anymore.wave

Well, long long time ago... marriage was when two people moved in together, built a home, had children. The piece of paper thing is fairly new concept (a few 100yrs old)... could be about the time when lawyers were invented (?)laugh
From the lofty heights of my vast experience, I personally believe that "shacking up together" should be just a "business contract"... run like a business.... so when/if it dissolves, you both know exactly where you stand as regards possesions... without subsidising your local friendly attorney`s new Merc or holiday cottage, and reducing you to your bicycle and cardboard hut

When there`s children involved.... THAT should be (if I was in charge of making the laws!) a water-tight contract that lasts until the thekids have been FULLY educated and independent... and the parents made to behave themselves in the interim. Maybe an arbitrator moves in to make sure! SPECIAL vows would have to be taken in a SPECIAL ceremony when the parents even begin to THINK about procreating themselves and bringing a child into the world. And they have to attend special classes where they learn that they now take second place in this partnership and their own personal feelings are now set aside.... maybe every week-end they got to go to refresher classes, just to keep reminding them.cool

yes, apart from religious values which have to be respected, I agree, who should marry with your heart, though people who belong to the richest group think differently, they quite insist on the piece of paper...strange!!Why might that be?confused

Marriage has been in a state of chaos for some time. I think many people don't take the commitment seriously. Maybe educating young adults about marriage would help. Also, if religions would stop controlling people by making them feel guilty, people would feel free to make their own choice. Good or bad. I strongly believe in God. I just don't be He is a controlling God.

i dont think marriage is anything to do with the church or goverments although they perform ceremonies and make laws i think marriage is an act of love between two people who stand as one in life and make a statement to all that they are a couple but you do not need a pice of paper to make this happen or in that fact in todays world to make it legal wow ive said to much again i see more complaits coming but i will always write what i think god bless and have a happy peaceful dayprofessor wave conversing handshake peace love with the worldprofessor

I think the reverse. Piece of paper always comes before any real attchment begins. Of course, there is a period of knowing each other before the piece of paper issue emerges. That is perhaps the most intense and passionate time of the relationship. After the piece of paper there comes may a thing, all eventually leading either to security and boredom or conflict and pain.

Dear Wedward, think hard before you decide ahead of time what marriage will be like.
