i don't really know anything about an "online" business per se', but i have thought about it on occassion...because i have a product i have thought of selling online...with all the competition out there, your title or key phrases within the front page of your web site would be paramount...because whatever your business is, someone will go through a search engine to find you, if they don't already know of your site location...i'm probably going on about elementary stuff here but as with any kind of sales venture...words are key...ahhhh never mind...i'm just rambeling on...
calmheartseeks: I've been asked this many times. It really depends on what you want to do! There is no one, simple blueprint for an online business, although there are commonalities. I have one but it is an information oriented site, with my own related products on the side.
Well I'm thinking of looking into some sort of marketing course/business development course .... I'm just looking for a place to start to get an idea of what is involved.

I totally get what your saying, because your website would need to be easily assessable by a few key words or links that would bring up your site. I wonder if people network with each other as well, to provide a link through another website? I've seen ads like that, but surely it can be done without adding extra costs.

yea, you would think, huh ?...maybe somekind of a deal like, you provide my link and i'll provide yours...but what you want to do is beat out the competition...not help it...YOUR site has to be the one...YOUR product is better than anybody elses...YOUR site is what you want them to stay on...if you send off your customer/client to another site you may lose a sale...may not seem like much to lose one sale...but you wont be losing ONE sale...you'll be losing the sales from that fanished customers friends and relitives from "word of mouth" advertising...nothing beats free advertising...it would be better, in my opinion, to leave out said links...and go the cost alone...just a thought...

In response to: I am wondering if anyone has ever started and ran their own online business or had their own small business venture that they've pursued? If so, how easy was it to start, how do you conduct research to make sure it was a good business venture?
Any other points would be valuable as well.
I've been asked what I've thought about doing an online business, but I honestly have no clue to where to even start, but its something that I thought about doing at various times. I figure the amount of energy and time I'm putting into my job, I'd maybe be better in investing into my own ventures.
I am thinking it would be a product oriented business as I don't possess any specialized service skills ...... although in looking up a link that Venus suggested about home sitters that particular website is for sale. I made me wonder how many others were for sale that were already at least started and how easy it would be simply take over.
I have run an online business. I was originally mail-order, and by going on-line it virtually eliminated my need to do mailings of catalogs,...the postal service was for sending of sales (which increased dramatically with online viewings).
Start with your local government - they have loads of information as to starting your own business or online or otherwise. There are also multitudes of great online reference sites (and advised earlier, there is NEVER a need to send money to anyone! I started mine without sending anyone a penny - except to the website designer, but I knew him personally). It may even be valuable to approach some well-established and reputable on-line businesses to establish a rapport and see if you can garner tips and advice from them! You can even get your feet wet on places like E-bay,...
It sounds exciting and I am glad you have opened your mind to to new possibilities. And you know where to find me if you want my 25 cents worth of advice,...
