Closing The News of the World is the opening of the biggerst can of worms we will witness since the Profumo Affair .......... It will make interesting watching as this story unfolds. Do you think that the press has too much freedom in what it prints? Are we the public, with our unquenchable thirst for information and scandal to blame for the lengths these newspapers and magazines have gone to in order to get their story ?

I think its a constant conflict of Freedom and the right to privacy,I also think that the sole object of today's trash papers are to sell papers..no matter who they hurt...Freedom of the press is is just a sentence..it doesn't give them the right to destroy someone or print lies.

As a rule I try to avoid them.

Today will no doubt see more coming out of the woodwork, both in terms of its content and those involved. It is somewhat refreshing to see police commissioners etc, immaterial of innocence or otherwise, step up and resign. Cant imagine that happening here were they hang on to the death.

The newspapers have been dictating ours lives for a long time now. People follow particularly those who dont want to think for themselves. Even the broadsheets have gone down the tabloid road.

It will be interesting to see if this unfolding senario will change things and the way the press operate in the future .................... dunno

It is a two sided coin in that they, the press could not sell their papers if we, the public did not buy them !!!!!!!

Hot enough for David Cameron to return home two days early............ and i think the police had no choice but to step down, i think that this is too hot for them to do other wise and they have the London Olympics to fall back on to save face !!

Hot potato or not you would have needed a JCB to move any of our lot in the same circumstances. Olympics is a year away so will be interesting to see what happens in the meantime

You are right, they would be sitting pretty as any enquiry into any scandal in this country would not be moving at anything near the pace of the press scandal in the UK at the min thumbs up

I do think they have too much freedom to be honest. Its one of the reasons i would hate to be famous because you are not allowed to have a private life. We probably are to blame because we buy these rags though. The thing that bugs me is that journalism seems to have become a very loose word these days. You start to wonder even in the so called reputable newspapers or magazines if any of what you read is actually true.

Yes indeed its almost ruined our own society. The media in britain are particularly adept at setting people up for a fall, and fuel some peoples appetite for it.

It will be interesting to see what comes of todays death.
