I used a credit card today to buy a new tire.

About an hour after I used the card I got a phone call from someone asking to speak to me. I said this is she.

The person calling said this is Vista Services calling to offer you $120.00 in coupons to buy gasoline. I asked her "now why would you do that". She replied "because you are a preferred customer with -------------------". Now I'm suspicious.

I knew that was B.S. because I do use the card but I'm not a shopaholic nor do I ever get close to the maximum limit and when I get the statement I pay it in full. It didn't make sense that this credit card company would give me $120.00 when I rarely use the card.

Then I said, "okay, wait a minute, slow down, I need to comprehend what you are saying. Then I said "what is your name again and who are you with". She said Nancy with Vista Services.

I continued to grill her and then she said "We're having a bad connection. I'll call back later" and she hung up.

Her number showed on my caller ID and I called it but got the run-around that I should call another number if I wanted to talk to someone. I called that number and there was a busy signal.

I called my credit card company and told the representative about the phone call and asked her to document my account. She wanted to block my account so that it couldn't be used but I told her I had a credit due the account and needed it to be left open.

My suspicious nature paid off today. If I didn't put this person in a mode where she had to explain herself I probably would have been scammed.

Perhaps the phone call was to verify that the card was active, or maybe she was going to charge $120.00 to my account.

This is the first time I've come close to my identity being stolen and I do feel vulnerable now.

devil doh wow uh oh moping shock sad detective

Anybody else care to tell if you've had a close call with your identity being stolen or if it actually was stolen.

Never had that happen but then again I only have a debit/check card. I don't do credit cards any more.

Also take that number and give it to the cyber crimes dept of your local PD. Make a report. They will investigate and hopefully get em good.

Had someone call me one time saying that I had a home payment past due.I explained to the lady that I've never had any credit for any home.

She read me this social security number and I told it didn't belong to anyone who lived in my household. She then asked me to give her the correct SS# and I refused to do so and hung up.

What those people don't try to get away with.

good for you! smart! years ago I had my identity stolen twice; once for a fake scam on ebay that the robbers took 32,000 dollars! The fbi came to my house and grilled me like I was in on it.

Anything suspicious, question. Nice job and thanks for the story; glad it worked out for you :)
