Ok maybe I can contribute a bit here. When the world was smaller people were addressed using their first name followed by either what they do or who is their father...for example, in the UK it was John the baker...becoming eventually John Baker (name and the new concept of surname)....also John son of James....this concept is still used in most arab countries..infact the names there is usually the first name followed by a form of surname being either of whom he is the son.
Now there can be hundreds of John Baker right? so the next step to being unique is to actually have a unique number ...hence the identity number. Unfortuantely its the only guarantee of uniquness based on the fact that the combination of numbers can be an infinite serious so you will never run out of unique numbers.
In hospitals its even more important!thumbs up

yes i agree that in hospitals keeping numbers for patients is imperative.. but when i was last in hospital the professor came in discussed my 'condition' with a number of medical students, of which of course i am not against. what i was upset about was that i was referred to as case no.6634 (made up that number cos forget what number i actually was), and they were discussing me as if i didnt exist.. it was only before they left that one of the students asked me how i was feeling.. geeze! doh

that is truly upsetting I agree with you and I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately certain medical consultants loose 'touch' with a patient and he or she becomes just a number for them...so sad isn't it? doh

Okay now we being serious. scold

Long time ago... babies had no names.... until they began to show their particular talents... and then the village held a "name ceremony"... and the appropriate name was bestowed on that person.

So eventually names like.... "He who breaks spear", "She who spills water", "He who wears pointy hat", etc.... simply became, over Centuries remember.... simple names. Like Pamela, Steven, Rosemary, etc. And now, if you pay attention to peoples names, you will notice that certain names carry certain personality traits..... even now, centuries later. And all names still have ancient meanings and tend towards certain professions, or personality types.

Benjamin ... is usually a very big person, very capable. The meaning is "Son of his fathers right hand". In Isizulu of Africa that name would be "Vusimusi" meaning "son who rebuilds his father's house". African tribal names have these long meanings, and the european equivalent have the same meanings.... with no visible connecting translations! People become their names.

Moral of this story is.... be very particular when naming your children.... if you have desires for their future. professor

Think about it, huh? How is a pet named.... We sit and watch it, and name it according to its behaviour. Or for some distinguishing mark it has.... Like Spot, Rags, Jumpy, Bully.

I had a slinky little Jack Russel female.. and her name was Scampi (a large prawn).

Then there was a Leroy, the Rotweiler, cause he was big and black and came from down south. (south of where we lived)

Then there was the Rhodesian Ridgeback called Rastus... after a cowboy song..... "Rastus Eustace Justice Brown
What you going to do
When the sun goes down?"
Because Leroy stole all the blankets from his bed at night, and sat and growled over them, so Rastus had to sleep in a bare bed.

Thats how WE named our pets.
The Goldfish was "Ogle".... .......

No, thats just a job some people train for.... like being a Politician..... The secret to life is to try and get out from The System.... but then you got to be happy with.... No Bank Account, No International Travel, No Auto, No Credit Cards, No Shopping Accounts, .... all that is possible..... If you prepared to go live in a cave up in the mountains somewhere. And then when hiking tourists find you one day, you could probably start your own business... and become a Guru.... till the Tax Man finds you!cool
