I know what happens... you fall in love with your own mental image of that person. Sure you can build empathy and get to "realy" know each other, and share humour and thoughts.. but they still just an image. So maybe you get lucky, and when you meet, you find that you realy like each other. Its just a long chance, like taking a lotto ticket... you could get lucky, and you could get just a big surprise! Huh? What you all think of that hypothesis?cool dancing grin

I met guys on the net that i really have a strong feeling for tham, but still i don't say it is love. Love is something bigger that two people share when thay are together and it gets bigger day by day. smitten

The infatuation can be so strong that you can confuse those feelings with love...smitten I am a very physical person and I also rely strongly on my instincts, so even though a connection can be made over the internet unless I meet the person face to face, have a whiff of this person's individual "aura", cologne, aftershave, breath, body moving around me, the real facial expressions when we talk, the eyes... forget it, I am playing along but not falling scold. And even then, I listen to my gut. You can be talking to a person on the phone, and that person may sound really interested in you and whatever you are talking about, but who know? they might be rolling their eyes in boredom roll eyes yawn

So, NO. You can't fall in love with someone you haven't met. At least I can't. Hence, the request for a leap of faith in my profile.

I could agree with you Smoky on just about everything, but I still think that I, to talk about myself, could fall in love with somebody over the net.
the difference to talking over the phone is that on this site, most people have photographs. And there are some terribly attractive females here.
we also comunicate by mail. We see each others' postings on the forums, and all these things give a lot of feedback about the person we could interest ourselves in. They help build the profile which is not visible.
So yes I can still say that unless the person has a horrible character and a large physical handicap which is not so obvious in the profile, in the picture, in the contributions and in the private e-mails, then yes I could really fall head over heels for a person who embodies physically my dreams for my perfect woman.
I think this is the first step towards real love.

I thought I was in love with someone on CS, until we met and I realised it was all an illusion. The person I imagined was not real and the real person was not what I imagined.

Perhaps on very rare occasions the reality might match the expectations and the feelings of love can become real.

When the imagination gets to work anything is possible. Besides, through the ages people have loved on a glimpse, a poem, a picture and correspondence of course , never doubting the depth of their attachment.

Has the requirement of corporeality for love to exist something to do with a failing of the imagination in a very materialistic age? I wonder.

Imagine.... in the 1800's.... when a shipload of women were sent over to another continent, as wives for the pioneers? The men stood at the dockside, watching the women disembarking, and most of them paired up, got married, and lived long and fruitfull lives..... My Great great Gran and Grandad were two such folk.

Maybe these days, with everyone acting "equal", and the material demands being so great, everyone is far too fussy over their partners?... Women dont fullfill their traditional roles anymore, and therefore the man is unable to fullfill his... his single salary is no longer sufficient. And so, strangers care for the children, food is of the "instant" variety, husband and wife pass each other on their ways to corporate employment like two ships passing in the night.....

This is a complex issue. I personnally love to cook and do what is considered traditional women things it never detracted the other side. And I have seen some of the best mechanics be women, did not really detract from their other side. But as a society we seem to go into extremes, never really finding that balance we look for.

Its not everywhere the same, I have seen both sides. People that like the old ways and stay with them, others moving to new ways...possibly driven by peer pressure who knows.

There was a lot of crap that happened in history we will never know, information was not so readibly available as it is now.
