robplum: well there are two burn marks on the mantle peace that might have been made by the chamber maid, but really this is a very interesting area, used to be one the biggest gold fields in Australia, heaps of Chinese dug for gold while large mining company's dug deep, they had dredges in the rivers in cassilis they dredge found 27 ounce nugget, a small river or creek they dredged down 90 feet to the bedrock, pushed the chinese market gardener aside and dredged his garden to, pretty wild place from all accounts, something like 1800 people lived on the haunted stream alone, there are old pubs, buildings, stampers and long gone mining and mill towns all over the place
gee missed this one of your posts robbo.i hope youre giving this place a real going over, ive been going to one place for two years and still havent gone right over it,i bet youll find some real good stuff to display

jem1964: Hey Rob, not just the Chinese mined Cassilis, my great grandfather and his brother were emigrated out from Canada to teach a method of mining used in that area. The area certainly has a fascinating history.

Its not just the history of the gold area either but also the history of the supply and transport to and from the goldfields.
If you are interested and are ever in the Yarram area got down to the Maritime Museum at Port Albert. They have the Government Gazettes there and it is interesting reading to say the least. Another place you can find a lot of information about the local areas is if the newspapers are still in existence and they have the archived old newspapers. The newspapers give a different story to authored books, although quite often they are used as a source by the authors.

Australia might not be an old country history wise, but it is rich

Keith McDonald Fairweather put out two or three books on mining, transport and so forth for Omeo, Glen Wills and the Tambo region which includes lots of research from news archives. Two i have access to are "Time to Remember" and "Brajerack" in those Keith Fairweather names many of the people who owned, managed and worked the mines. I've also download lots of Historical information off the internet, as well as mining and mineral info in Gippsland. Heaps of available information is freely available online Jem.

I found it all very interesting
