My friend Kate was walking on a pebble beach one day.

She bent down and picked up an ordinary looking pebble, flipped it over and on the other side was painted the name...Kate.

She had just dropped it accidently and then picked it back up?

No, she genuinely found this pebble with her name on it, exactly as I described.

I would imagine it was a bit of a shock and surprise to find that stone.

I don't think it was an unpleasant surprise for her. laugh

I'm still interested in why we may be unnerved by an improbable coincidence.

Do we have some level of perception that we are not aware of?

Like babies learning that mirrors are a reflection and they start to look behind them, rather than behind the mirror, are we looking in the wrong places for answers?

Now it gets really interesting.
I think there was a reason why, that at one point in time she just happened to find a single, unique pebble out of millions around her. It could be some sort of message, could be luck but still, why that paticular stone and why did it have a name like hers on it?

Have you seen the pebble yourself and, does it look the same as the others where she found it?

Yes, I've seen the pebble and the side without the name is typical, absolutely typical of the region. Nothing to distinguish it all. grin

That rules out the possibility of the pebble coming from somewhere else. But, it was painted on so someone had to have painted it and either deliberately put it there name face down or accidently dropped it without knowing.

Does your friend frequent that beach regularly?

She found the pebble many years ago, so I can't tell you exactly how frequently she went to that beach, or which beach it was, or whether it was the first time she'd visited, or what. As far as I know, she's never lived close enough to a beach to pop down every day, so I think visits would be like once, or twice a month at the most.

I'll have to ask her sometime.

Unnerving can be used in different contexts. In this case, she will probably have few surprises like this one was, and like experiencing something scary, once you experience it, you sometimes gain a certain immunity to something similar happening in the future.

In a sense, she may be unnerved to certain future surprises.

But why would it be scary in the first place?

jac379: Why?
Well, having thought about it,i can offer no other logical explanation.
Okay, someone she knew could have written her name on it and left it ther, but the fact she found it was coincedence.
Also,Kate is not an unusual name, and the stone could have been inscribed by another Kate,or friend of,and it was just coincidence she found it,and her name being Kate.
You do realise that all this thinking is giving me a headache dont you!doh

I was just comparing it to something scary. Her finding the rock with her name was not scary, but when you find such an unlikely thing in the most unlikely circumstances, your mind will start spinning up everything from coincidence to divine intervention and everything in between trying to explain and rationalize the odds of such luck.

It will leaving you remembering how you felt that moment for a long time.
