I got a rough quote for getting the attic insulated and just wondering how much of a difference does it make to houses?
Also going to get a quote for getting cavity walls done

so just any tips for what to ask or watch out for would be great and has it made a difference to the houses ??

I would advice you to get it done, get the attic sprayed and your cavity walls pumped, its a far better job than the insulation you will already have in your cavity walls, im a blocklayer and have seen some of the ways this is put in by other cowboys blocklayers! Any bocklayer that has built his own house that actually knows anything will have his cavitys pumped, i know of plenty that have and it will reduce your heating bill

Have to agree with john there thumbs up

Id advise you to see what grants are available to you

It was about 2000 euros of a grant 2 years ago
Id say youd be lucky to get 800 Euro grant now

But in the long run it will save you tons on heating costs conversing

I moved in here just over 3 years ago and the house was a lot warmer so I am going to get windows checked and doors and hopefully get attic and walls done

I know of the builder that built this house and he is one of the better ones around here but still coz it was an estate its not the same as building a house for a person

There are a few things to look out for, maybe this will be of some help.

Try to get an energy analysis done on your house, BER or similar. Find out how much heating fuel per annum you will save, and do a Cost Benefit Analysis to see how many years the payback period is. For example, if the insulation costs €5000, and you save €250 per year on heating, it will take 20 years+ for the insulation to pay for itself.

You can get a surveyor with a thermal imaging camera to identify the areas where the most heat is lost, i.e., walls, windows, roof. Sometimes, the window frames can be a big loss - poor quality, improperly fitted. Show your insulation guy these areas, check them again after he's finished.

There's a few problems with spray foam insulation. For example, it will leave parts of your attic difficult to access for maintenance, may hide roof leaks and damage. Also, it can cause an effect known as cold spots related to thermal bridging. This causes moisture to build up, which ruins the insulation and causes further damage. It can also be difficult to find where that problem is, if you use spray foam. So if your guy hasn't heard of thermal bridging and cold spots, get someone else. ireland

Bit aggressive an uncalled for?!

I've a trade background, houses mainly, and an engineering degree that covers most energy saving construction/improvement methods.

Cool off. ireland

If you are getting the attic done, make sure that there is still adequate ventilation from the eaves to keep the timbers in your roof in good shape. Attic insulation is a very good way of improving your home. As for costs, we have no idea how much oil or gas are going to increas, so to me anything that minimises the usage is a good investment regards of the pay back time.

Hi Annie,
I got my attic insulated last summer, i got a grant of €700 it cost €1200 in total for walls and attic, i had to pay it all first and 10 weeks later the grant was in my bank, it also included BER Rating, which getting it done alone can cost €250 approx, hope that helps you :)

I'm insulating my own attic myself..cheaper that way all I need to do is buy the insulation and put it down on top of the old stuff..using a handsaw to cut it up into suitable piecesireland

Only spotted this thread now Anne, how old is your house, if it was new when you moved in and things were done right there shouldnt be a huge problem with your insulation, though with speculative building the minimum requirement was all that was adhered to. Even that has been improved upon recently. I ve been specifying higher thicknesses of attic insul and also insul backed slabs to exterior walls for years now which is only way to go. A lot of what you need has been said already, start with a survey by a BER assessor, thermal imaging and air tightness are important, though an experienced assessor worth his salt should be able to ttell you a lot by a visual examination. You can take it the cavities will need pumping, an extra layer of insul in attic depending on whats there, get all the seals checked around openings in windows and doors, anywhere you ve got pipes going through an outside wall make sure its sealed properly....you d be surprised at what i ve found while snagging!!! There should be controls on your heatng system as well, assessor should be able to tell you whats missing by just looking. Not a whole lot more you can do without going to a lot of expense and pulling the place assunder. Retro fitting insul inside or outside would do more for heat loss but where do you stop with budget, payback and upheaval.
